Hospital and EMS unite for World Trauma Day
MELOMED Private Hospital’s emergency unit commemorated World Trauma Day, which is observed annually on 17 October.
The day highlights the importance of saving and protecting a life during the most critical moments, creating increased awareness about trauma and educating the public on ways to address traumatic incidents.
According to the World Health Organisation, trauma is a major cause of death and disability globally. Research reveals that at least 50% of road deaths in developing countries could have been prevented through adequate interference after the incident.
Melomed Private Hospital took the time to upskill local EMS personnel through a programme led by specialist neurosurgeon Dr Nondubula Moyeni and orthopaedic surgeon Dr Thato Mnikithe. The day culminated in knowledge sharing and collaboration with the hospital to ensure advances in emergency medicine and improved treatment guidelines are shared for the patients’ benefit in case of emergency.
“While we commemorate World Trauma Day, we at Melomed Richards Bay also see it fit to take the opportunity to better equip our EMS colleagues,” says client services officer Sbonelo Goodman.
Melomed’s Emergency Unit runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to deal with trauma resulting from road accidents, falls, burns, industrial explosions, fires, and violence.
Goodman believes that, by coming together, they can continue to serve communities.
“Together we can achieve more to serve the healthcare needs of patients in northern KZN,” he said.
