Driver held up at gunpoint in Bay by man impersonating a police officer

WHAT should have been a routine delivery turned into the stuff of nightmares for a senior citizen, who was lucky to escape with his life after being held up at gunpoint by a police officer imposter. Durban resident Brian Hiscock (72) has for the past four years frequented Richards Bay at least three times a month to make deliveries to various clients. He works for his son's company in the logistics and security sector. Speaking to the ZO on Tuesday, Hiscock said he was about to call it a day on Monday evening after a long day of deliveries, and had found a place to spend the night as he was too tired to drive back to Durban. He says, soon after he was done with his last delivery he drove straight to his accommodation venue in Richards Bay, where he had booked a night.

“On my way to the lodge, I passed a silver BMW. After driving for a while, I realised the car was following me," he said.

"I rushed to the lodge's gate but the BMW jammed me so I could not enter. Because I have been hijacked before, I turned back and drove for two kilometres and found people at the side of the road and stopped to tell them my plight.

"While I was there, the BMW arrived and the driver ordered me to get out. He had a gun in his hand and flashed a card, telling me he was a police officer,” said Hiscock.

When Hiscock asked what he might have done wrong to be subjected to such ‘police brutality’, the ‘officer’ told him he had skipped stop signs and that the he was going to shoot him.

“The driver of a white MercedesBenz, noticing that a gun was pointed at my head, stopped and a well-dressed gentleman introduced himself to the alleged police officer, and told him how much trouble he could find himself in for pointing a firearm at an innocent civilian. That is how I got off the hook,” said Hiscock.

A case of pointing of a firearm was registered at Richards Bay Police Station and is under investigation.
