From top cop to artistic deejay

- Wellington Makwakwa

AGE is but a number for DJ Gogo Elizah.

From top-ranking cop to master of spin, this 64-year-old deejay from eNcekwane is making waves in the entertainment industry.

AmaPiano, gqom, deep house and more - this emerging deejay plays it all, creating magic on the decks and filling dance floors wherever she goes.

Elizabeth Mkhize started deejaying in 2022 after retiring from years of working as a top police colonel.

“Music is food for the soul. I have always loved it, but being a mother and a policewoman, I couldn’t pursue it. Now it’s time to change my dream and do what makes me happy,” she said.

After retiring, she registered for spinning lessons at Digisoul Academy, learning the skill from well-known spinner Dustysoul.

She hasn't looked back, going on to work with DJ Trapezium, earning a platform to introduce herself to the public.

“I understand some have questions about what I do, but I have answers.

“Age is just a number and shouldn’t prevent anyone from chasing what makes them happy. I’m having the time of my life playing music for large crowds and seeing everyone happy,” she said, adding that she doesn't need much sleep, which means spending more time on the decks.

“It's been incredible working with young guys. I’m learning a lot from them and sharpening my skills. Everyone in the industry has been welcoming and respectful,” she said.

DJ Gogo Elizah told the ZO that her new career is not just to pass time, but she has big dreams for the local youth, especially women.

She is currently working on an event where she will be deejaying and educating young women.

“We have unemployed youth in our area who need to be guided and empowered. That's what I aim to do,” she said.

She also hopes to compose and produce her own music, but for now, Zululanders can catch her deejaying sets around town.
