Activities continue unabated at Bay ‘party house’

CITY by-laws continue to be contravened at a Richards Bay house that is being used as student accommodation despite a notice having been issued to the owner.

Earlier this month, the ZO reported on a complaint from an irate Veldenvlei resident about how Arum Lily street has become a hive of party activity, with noise at times continuing well into the early hours of the morning.

The house is said to be leased by the University of Zululand and was recently issued with a non-compliance notice from the City of uMhlathuze.

In the most recent event, the resident said the night in question was just another ‘rinse and repeat’ of previous behaviour.

He said, while the party ended just before 10pm this time, he was still concerned as to why it was being allowed to carry on.

Has an order to desist been actioned? Why are there still students? Are the 'cottages' that were built illegally going to be torn down?

These were some of the questions he still wants answers to.

“I fear he gets approval to continue with student accommodation without following the correct process. Surely the area must be rezoned and my approval must be sought as the adjoining neighbour?” asked the concerned resident.

City of uMhlathuze communications manager Bongani Gina confirmed that the house owner was issued with a contravention notice and the residence was not eligible to function as student accommodation.

Gina further urged residents to report any nuisance to law enforcement as and when it occurs.

The ZO sent a list of questions to Unizulu's Department of Communication, with no response at the time of going to print.
