OTAVALO: EL MERCADO ARTESANAL MÁS GRANDE
En San Luis de Otavalo, a poco más de cien kilómetros al norte de Quito, Ecuador, se alza el mercado artesanal más grande de Latinoamérica.
Cada sábado, las calles de esta ciudad del altiplano andino de la provincia de Imbabura se llenan de puestos con ropa de coloridos textiles, artesanías en barro, pintura, madera, bisutería, orfebrería, talabartería, mazapán, cerámica y más. También es oportunidad única para degustar comidas autóctonas y escuchar música de esta región situada en medio de un valle donde se encuentra el volcán Imbabura.
La Plaza de los Ponchos, también conocida como Mercado Centenario, es el corazón de la feria y funciona todos los días.
Otavalo, visitada por cientos de miles de turistas de todas partes del mundo, ha sido declarada «Capital intercultural de Ecuador».
OTAVALO: THE LARGEST ARTISAN MARKET
In San Luis de Otavalo, a little over a hundred kilometers north of Quito, Ecuador, is located the largest artisan market in Latin America.
Every Saturday, the streets of this city in the Andean highlands of the province of Imbabura are filled with stalls with colorful textiles, handicrafts in clay, paint, wood, costume jewelery, goldsmith's, saddlery, marzipan, pottery and more. It is also a unique opportunity to taste local foods and listen to music from this region located in the middle of a valley where the Imbabura volcano is located.
The Plaza de los Ponchos, also known as Mercado Centenario (Centennial Market,) is the heart of the fair and is open every day.
Otavalo, visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world, has been declared «Capital intercultural de Ecuador» (Intercultural Capital of Ecuador.)
