CHAPISTERÍA, CAMBIO ABSOLUTO PARA FABRICAR AÚN MEJOR
A complete change to the Body Shop for improved manufacturing
With a floor area of 32,000 m2 and investment of more than 112 million euros, the 1C Body Shop Unit represents the beginning of a new era for Volkswagen Navarra. For just under a few months, production in the body shop left its previous workflow behind to begin organising a production process with the new facilities in mind: Chassis 1 and 2 at unit 1C; interior sides and Body 1 at unit 1B; and Body 2 and 3 and hinged elements at unit 1. The process continues to be split between two factories, each one with a daily production rate of 700 bodyworks. The first new Polo units are currently being produced in factory 2, where the second model will also be produced in late 2018. The MQB27 modular platform, with which the new SYNERGIES Polo is manufactured, allows synergy to be established with the Group’s other brands, as well as parts to be shared with vehicles such as the SEAT Ibiza, the Skoda Fabia and the Audi A1. The production process entails new developments, according to the company. From now on, the facilities will operate with standardised VASS (Volkswagen, Audi SEAT and Skoda) technology, in addition to all processes being sequenced with a greater level of programming, thanks to the RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) system. “These variations can even be

The exterior sides and the roof are then fitted at unit 1, forming Body 2, before moving on to the following stage of completion, which results in Body 3. “Finally, the hinged elements are added, such as doors, the rear hatch and the bonnet. The bodywork is then ready to be transferred to the paint shop”, explains the body shop manager, Manuel García Bueno, who highlights the importance that “teamwork” has had in strengthening this change in production flow. “The whole factory has done its utmost for the new car”, adds Juan Fernández Urtasun, head of bodywork processes. “The new processes have meant a greater workload”, he continues, “and they have forced us to organise ourselves better, above all because when the new Polo launch finishes, we will begin with the pre-series of the new model”. The new units possess two levels of additional TRANSPORTATION TECHNIQUES transport technology. The traditional level, comprised of tables and rollers, has been extended to
