The fifth edition of the Automobile Subcontracting Show in Tangier demonstrated that Morocco continues to strive to become one of the new centres of attraction for the automotive industry, with great opportunities for suppliers from the sector, as they themselves explained to AutoRevista.
It the fifth edition of the Automobile Subcontracting Show, Aktrion Automotive presented all of the engineering services that the company offers, from product development and production start-up to process improvements. “We exhibited innovative solutions for improving systems for supplying parts to lines with pick-by-voice, quality control systems with map-vision and our Arrow real-time reporting system”, said company sources. The company didn’t hesitate to describe the fair as “positive” and highlighted that their objective was “to make ourselves known in the area and to obtain contacts that enable us to present first-hand the services that we can offer”. As they explained to AutoRevista, this objective “has been achieved”. Sources from Aktrion Automotive claim to have managed “to catch the attention of manufacturers and to set up technical meetings to explain in detail the solutions that we put forward”. Aktrion recognises that “the array of opportunities that the area of Tangier offers is immense”. The wealth of possibilities is due to the fact that “industries are setting up and starting to produce. For an engineering services company such as Aktrion, it means being able to support engineering from the outset and during the development of the project, in addition to helping manufacturers attain quality standards that enable them to continue growing in an efficient manner”.
Edaetech avanza que, en el futuro, y una vez que desarrollen su tecnología Edaetech, founded in 2002 with the aim of providing EDAETECH engineering services such as the prototyping of stamping parts, milling and assembly for welding and riveting operations, presented stamping parts of highly technical complexity in both aluminium and steel in Tangier. In addition, the Portuguese company, which also offers a 2D and 3D laser cutting service, presented a cast aluminium part with complex geometry and tight tolerances that required milling on five high-speed axes. Edaetech made it clear that, with the resources available, it has sufficient capacity to also respond to small series. The company’s current situation in the Moroccan market involves attracting investment for local production, be it in the free trade zone or elsewhere, for subsequent exporting. According to company sources in remarks made to AutoRevista, “In the short term we don’t have high business expectations, in spite of being the second closest country geographically”. Edaetech acknowledges that, at present, clients in more distant countries, such as the USA, with a different history and industrial maturity, are seeking out their prototyping service more. Edaetech added that in the future and

Como ejemplo García Comas resalta la creciente asistencia de empresas al salón de Tánger, así como el aumento en el número de estands y patrocinadores. once they develop their laser cutting technology, it is possible that they will make investment in Morocco in hot stamping, “which would allow us to get more involved in the market”. Company sources claim: “If the leading testers invest more in local R&D, then the prototype and pre-series stages will enjoy business opportunities”. Edaetech currently works in different markets with clients (among them OEM, Tier 1 companies from the thermal field, seats, chassis, autonomous driving, fluids, infotainment, safety and visibility, among others) that make the company deal with adversities, if any, in some of the markets in which they are active. GEFCO Spain and GEFCO Morocco were in attendance GEFCO at the Automobile Subcontracting Show in Tangier and for the third year running were in turn reinforcing relations between both subsidiaries. Moreover, for the purpose of the forthcoming PSA plant to be opened in Kenitra, the Gefco teams from both countries will go hand in hand to accompany the French manufacturer in this new project, as well as in the growth of the automotive sector in Morocco. Pelayo García Comas, the commercial and marketing director of GEFCO Spain, acknowledges that the fair “is becoming an essential meeting point for both car and components manufacturers and logistics companies that operate in the sector”. As an example, García Comas highlighted the rising attendance of companies to the show in Tangier, as well as the increase in the number of stands and sponsors. Furthermore, “On this occasion, GEFCO Spain attended in order to accompany our clients based in Morocco,

In terms of both production and its strategic positioning, he also considers that Spain and Morocco are key axes of development in the automotive sector. “Spain is the number one supplier of Morocco, a country that is making a commitment to invest in infrastructures intended for the automotive sector. Therefore, the automotive industry (equipment, components and accessories) has become its main economic driver, which makes the development possibilities of our company in this area enormous”. García Comas went on to add: “With the forthcoming opening of the new PSA plant in Kenitra we will increase our flows and find new possibilities for expanding our business and the services that we offer, both in Morocco and for the export of vehicles to Latin America through our overseas business unit”. GEFCO Spain’s Commercial and Marketing director recognises that “it is very likely that in the coming years we will witness the evolution of the automotive market in the country, which, with all likelihood, will help leading suppliers to evolve in the sector and which may cause a change in the barycentre of manufacturers in Spain”. Company sources described the fair as “highly positive”, stressing the large number of people who were “very professional and very interested in finding reliable suppliers”. At their stand, the company presented their new line of Sauda machining centres, produced by themselves with 3 and 5 axis machines, high-speed centres and gantry centres up to 5,000 mm. “The machines have an excellent quality/price ratio, which aroused interest in many of the professionals who attended the fair”, said the company. Grupo Sijalon has just reached an agreement with WNT, specialists in precision tools for the machining industry, through which it becomes the brand’s exclusive importer for Morocco, through their Maghrebi company OEME (Outils et Equipement Maroc-Espagne). “WNT has a catalogue of more than 80,000 references that offer solutions for any machining process. Clients, the majority aware of the brand, were enthusiastic about the idea of a Spanish company such as Grupo Sijalon, based in Morocco, distributing the product in the region, with the guarantee of stocks, quality and guaranteed delivery times”. Nervión, specialists in the manufacturing and commercialisation NERVIÓN of paper and packaging materials for different industrial uses, attended the Automobile Subcontracting Show in Tangier for the first time as an exhibitor, presenting their anti-corrosion packaging alternatives “in one of our sector’s emerging markets”, said the firm’s managing director, Mikel Arzoz. Nervión has just undertaken an expansion of their commercial department, with the incorporation of an export manager and a company internationalisation project. The company defined the fair as “positive”, since Nervión has met several of the objectives that they had set such as reaching out to new companies based in Morocco, touching base with potential new collaborators and offering their services and products to logistical companies and distributors, who can strengthen and improve their position in the Moroccan market. On behalf of Nervión, their managing director explained to AutoRevista: “All this process is part of the company’s internationalisation strategy and its process of growth in Morocco”. Arzoz commented on the fact that several OEM are in the process of opening new factories in Morocco, which will cause significant growth of its auxiliary industry and, in turn, companies likely to use VCI packaging, “who are very important for Nervión. We estimate that the potential of VCI packaging in Morocco for the forthcoming years will grow in an exponential manner and Nervión wants to be prepared so we can anticipate it and take suitable steps in the short to medium term”. At the fair, Smurfit Kappa SMURFIT KAPPA Morocco, supplier of card packaging solutions, presented their latest innovations in terms of design, materials and packaging formats available for this sector and this country. The company exhibited 100% paper-based packaging solutions for the motor world, “which offer maximum protection for these highly valuable items, as well as greater personalisation and significant savings in economic and environmental costs”, said Miguel Hernández, general manager of Smurfit Kappa Morocco. Among the solutions exhibited by the company are the Easytainer Automotive, “an alternative to Palebox, which allows fast handling and saves space”; conditioners for two or four car projectors “that favour the ergonomics of loading in the Palebox”; or the two new Hexacomb trays die-cut in honeycomb, intended for the transport of brake calipers and for the steering system of vehicles. “These are characterised by their great strength and lightness and provide a high level of

Solutions with anti-slip paper treatments also stood out, “so that loads can be subject to a certain degree of inclination in their handling and to reduce the use of plastic films, with flame retardant treatments to minimise the risk of use in environments such as welding areas; or with charge dissipator treatments, which prevent the accumulation of static charges that can be dangerous for the integrity of the product and for the operators themselves”. They also exhibited the Palebox-type packaging with a Galia base and double windows, the compact grid with PE treatment or the Steering Damper for shafts and shock absorbers. “This event is an excellent opportunity to unveil our main new developments and specific products for the sector, in addition to making direct contact with leading manufacturers, who each year demand innovative solutions that improve their activity and optimise the supply chain. “Our presence in Morocco gives us the opportunity to broaden our experience and the ability to build influence in the area, in addition to providing proximity with clients and improving collaboration”, said Hernandez. The industrial packaging specialist DS Smith Tecnicarton DS SMITH TECNICARTON primarily presented their range of products aimed at the automotive industry, among which were their multi-material packaging solutions, designed for housing supply parts for production lines and which can be moved between plants.
“The packaging can be personalised depending on the parts that they contain and the designated use. It also has rigid and flexible interior conditioning”, said the company’s marketing director, Antonio Cebrián. DS Smith Tecnicarton also exhibited corrugated cardboard containers with multi-material conditioning, which are also the company’s most developed products. For the company, as Cebrián points out, the Subcontracting Show in Tangier is “an opportunity to reach out to both the OEMs that are settling in Morocco and Tier 1 suppliers, since both are our target audience”. The company’s final appraisal of the show was “positive”, as it has become one of the fairs that they always attend. What’s more, DS Smith Tecnicarton has a production plant in Morocco with its own design department, which is coordinated with the R&D+i centre that the company has in Almussafes (Valencia). “This assures customers in Morocco that their products can be customised and adapted to their needs. And that they always have the backing of the R&D+I department”. Cebrián says that the potential of the automotive sector in Morocco “allows them to be optimistic because of the signals they receive from the environment, everything from the production that is taking place in the area to the momentum being experienced by the Free Trade Zone proves this”. The Automotive Technology Centre of Galicia (CTAG) CTAG participated for the first time in the Automobile Subcontracting Show in Tangier to introduce their skills in R&D, as well as to identify potential business opportunities in the Moroccan automotive ecosystem. Sources from the centre evaluated their presence at the show positively: “Our technical proposal was well received and it has allowed us to establish interesting contacts”. CTAG went on to add that they made contact with more than 100 professionals from the automotive sector, “both suppliers of services and components and vehicle manufacturers”. What is more, the show was a good opportunity for CTAG to reach out to clients based in Morocco and also to make contact with those embarking on it. According to sources from CTAG, they are “currently interested in this market due to the strong growth of the automotive sector in the country, in which many business possibilities are arising. Therefore, we think that we can accompany local development by providing competence in R&D and validation”.
