Cibrián Gallery
ART GALLERY
It is always great news to talk of the opening of a new gallery and thus have proof that culture is still in full swing.the latest addition to the Basque Country art scene is Cibrián, a space that was recently inaugurated in San Sebastian by Gregorio Cibrián. After his successful work in management at Vetus Art, Gregorio decided to start a gallery for contemporary art to be able to give exposure to youthful creative expressions framed within a context of local and international identity. Gregorio launched the project with the support of prestigious professionals from the culture world: collectors, artists, and directors of leading art centers and museums, amongst others. His gallery aims to become a platform for local creators and to generate a constant dialog between the new discourses that emerge at the international level and those that reflect a strong local identity.
With an array of young and mid-career artists, as well as regular collaborative efforts with curators, critics, and recognized players in the sector, Cibrián has developed a solid and unpredictable schedule of exhibitions that aims to promote his artists on the international contemporary scene and introduce the local audience to foreign creators. His vocation dangles between the local and global levels:“it is necessary to think globally and act locally, but also think locally and act globally,” explains Gregorio.
The first exhibition at Cibrián was called “Bilduma: Rethinking Painting,” and it had a cast of leading artists: Gerhard Richter, Magali Reus, Wade Guyton, Nagore Amenabarro, José Ramón Amondarain, Tauba Auerbach, Ángela de la Cruz, Manu Muniategiandikoetxea, Iñaki Gracenea, and Marlie Mul.
The famed photographer Leandro Feal will take the baton with an individual exhibition.this is not the first time this Cuban has put on an exhibition in the Basque Country; his work has been on display in previous years at the Artium Museum ofvitoria and at Bilbao Arte.
Cibrián promises to bring fresh air to the cultural landscape of the region, opening the door to new pop-up exhibition formats and to ephemeral projects - all the while with an enviable and diverse selection of artists with different lines of work.with the experience he has gained by participating in international fairs (Basel, New York, etc.) and having dominated the local market at the previous gallery, this new space by Gregorio Cibrián will become, for sure, a leader in the art world.
