Silence for Orlando
Costa town halls and other institutions held a minute of silence on Monday to show their solidarity towards the victims of the shooting in Orlando.
TOWN halls and lesbian and gay collectives around Alicante province paid tribute to the victims of the Orlando massacre this week.
The first of these was held on Monday outside Alicante city hall.
Local councillors and members of the gay community denounced the barbaric slaughter which occurred when a heavily armed intruder opened fire during a party at a gay nightclub on Sunday. They held a five-minute silence to denounce the killings and show solidarity with the victims.
Councillors from Torrevieja town hall and civil servants held a similar silent protest the following day at noon.
Mayor José Manuel Dolón said: “We are here to offer a cry for freedom and to show solidarity with the victims and their families.”
He lamented that 'fanaticism and irrationality' had once again hit a western nation. Sr Dolón said they wanted to 'emphasise the right that all people have to live as they choose'.
He noted that the 'gay flag' would be hung outside the town hall with a black ribbon to mark the tragedy.
US President Barack Obama said the inquiry into the attack on the Pulse gay night club, in which 49 people were killed, is being treated as a terrorist investigation.
The FBI's director said the gunman was radicalised through the internet.
He claimed to carry out the attack in the name of the so-called Islamic State.
