Fire warning billboards on Montgó

FOREST fire warning signs colour-coded according to risk level have been set up in strategic parts of the Montgó and La Plana in Jávea, especially in areas destroyed by the massive inferno of September 2014.

Civil Protection volunteers will change the colours on the seven billboards whenever the regional government issues a new alert level, although in summer this usually sits at red, the maximum.

Some of the signs have been set up in areas with no conservation watch scheme, meaning regular visits to change the alert colour will also help fulfil this look-out function.

The boards have been set up on the Montgó, near the Jesús Pobre road, at the Cabo de San Antonio viewpoint, next to one of the La Plana windmills, and in other rural parts particularly vulnerable to wildfires.

Jávea's summer 'fire watch' campaign starts annually on May 31 and continues until the end of September.

During this time, bonfires of any description are banned, and residents and visitors are urged to be very careful when using power tools that may give off sparks, and not to drop cigarette butts.

They are instructed to ring the 112 emergency hotline if they see flames or smoke, which works even on a low mobile battery or with no credit or signal, and callers can ask for an English-speaker.
