May in Madrid
BRITISH PM Theresa May was in Madrid yesterday (Thursday) to pay an official visit to Spanish acting PM Mariano Rajoy and discuss matters of mutual interest including the repercussions Brexit will have on British citizens living in Spain.
BRITISH PM Theresa May visited Spain yesterday.
Her first official visit to Spain since taking over at Number 10 was to meet her acting Spanish counterpart, Mariano Rajoy, at Moncloa Palace at 12.30.
The two government leaders met and held a working lunch, with Brexit and its effect on UK-Spain relations as the main item on the agenda.
In a telephone conversation in July, both agreed that no Spanish or British citizens should be harmed by the Brexit result. As a result of that conversation, yesterday's meeting was arranged.
In his congratulatory telegramme following Theresa May's appointment, Sr Rajoy presented himself as a 'loyal friend of Britain and its people',

Another item on the agenda will be Gibraltar and the joint-sovereignty plan presented at the UN.
The subject has always been a thorn in the bilateral relations and the plan gave way to a diplomatic crossfire between Gi- braltar main minister Fabian Picardo and Spanish acting foreign affairs minister José Manuel García Margallo.
After the plan was presented, Picardo was adamant: "No way, José, you will never get your hands on the rock" - to which García-Margallo answered: "I won't just put my hand on it, I'll put the flag there - and before Picardo thinks."
