LET THEM KNOW WE MATTER

Sign our petition over associate EU citizenship

- By Dave Jones

We believe that associate citizenship will make life much easier for British expats who live in countries such as Spain once the UK leaves the EU – and will guarantee rights they cannot afford to lose. We are urging the UK and EU authorities to make associate EU citizenship free of charge – or to only levy a nominal fee.

Speaking about associate EU citizenship, Liberal Democrat MEP Catherine Bearder said: “The option of being able to retain EU citizenship offers a glimmer of hope for the millions of British people devastated by the referendum result.”

She noted that everyone who supports the proposal ‘should write to MEPs and tell them how passionately they feel about maintaining their rights as EU citizens, including the ability to live, study and work abroad’. THIS week the Costa Blanca News group launches the petition ‘Tell the UK government you want associate EU citizenship’.

We are aiming to show Theresa May’s team that the hundreds of thousands of British expats living in Spain want guarantees over their future in the country.

Associate EU citizenship is the proposal made by MEP Charles Goerens to allow individual UK nationals to keep their rights following Britain’s withdrawal from the EU.

Under the initiative, Britons would have the option of paying a fee in order to retain ‘freedom of movement’ in the EU and a vote in European elections.

EU Brexit negotiator Guy Verhofstadt said he would ensure it is included in the Parliament’s negotiating mandate.

We at the Costa News Group are appealing to the UK government to sign up to the proposal and make clear that they will implement associate EU citizenship for all Britons who want it.
