Hope in cancer battle

- By Jack Troughton

CUTTING edge technology at Dénia Hospital will help save lives by giving doctors the chance of making an earlier diagnosis in cancer cases.

A donation of €100,000 from the Masonic Home of Valencia Association – matched by the Marina Salud de Denia Hospital – has purchased a new CT scanner to lead the fight against the disease.

Head of Oncology Dr Joan Gasent described it as a “fantastic machine”, explaining it was important to be able to cure patients “and you need cutting edge technology to get an early diagnosis".

“It will help the early detection of microscopic cancer cells which gives the best chance to cure patients and save lives.”

He said the scanner gave a better quality of image but needed fewer harmful x-rays to achieve it. “It gives us more and better-quality information. At the end of the day there is someone looking at the image on the screen telling us what they see; it gives a betterquality report.”

And he paid tribute to the generosity of charity volunteers. “I think the charities in Spain are the best ambassadors for the UK outside their country. It is not very often that so many people owe so much to such a few people like you.”

The hospital’s General Manager, Dr Angel Gimenez, thanked the association for “this fabulous and very important donation” that had given the opportunity to buy another scanner for the Oncology Department.

And the volunteers of the Moraira Charity Shop – described as the “life blood” of the association – were thanked for their hard work raising money as the “most important section of this project”.

Jenny Hart, the new association president, said she was privileged to be part of a charity “involved in doing such a wonderful thing for our community”.

“We are very proud to be working side by side with Marina Salud,” she said. “Thank you to all the staff at the hospital for you commitment.

“We hope this second CT scanner will help cut down waiting times and be beneficial to both patients and doctors.”

Jenny acknowledged that "without the charity shop team we would not be able to continue helping others in the community”.
