A FINNISH woman who was arrested after allegedly injuring a cyclist in a hit and run incident in Bigastro has been released on bail by a Torrevieja court.

The 41-year-old driver, who does not have a driving licence and tested positive for alcohol, is accused of leaving the victim, aged 30, in a very serious condition and driving away without helping him.

He is being treated in intensive care at Vega Baja Hospital in Orihuela for severe head injuries.

According to the Guardia Civil press office, the collision happened on Sunday morning when she had already fled the scene of another accident.

She was not located until 19.30 that evening, when she denied responsibility at first but was still over the drink driving limit, recording results of 0.34 and 0.33 in two tests.

Traffic officers found her car in an orange grove in Guardamar del Segura.

She has been charged with failing to help, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving without a licence and causing injury.

According to a spokeswoman for the Regional Supreme Court (TSJ), the judge stripped the suspect of her passport ‘as a precautionary measure’.

She has also been ordered to report to Torrevieja courthouse every two weeks.

This case is the latest in a series of accidents in Alicante province in which drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs – or both – have been implicated in crashes that killed or seriously injured cyclists.

Two of these incidents occurred on the N-332 road in the north of the province in May and June.
