WORK ON BENISSA BYPASS 'OFFICIALLY' BEGINS

- By Jo Pugh jpugh@cbnews.es

DEPUTY PM Soraya Sáez de Santamaría visited Benissa on Monday to officially sanction and open the construction of the long-awaited Benissa bypass.

After a four-year wait, and a previous contractor going bust, the 32-month-long project will now get underway.

In addition to Sra Saenz de Santamaría, attending the event were: the Minister of Development, Íñigo de la Serna; the Government delegate Juan Carlos Moragues; the President of the Diputación de Alicante, César Sánchez; and the mayor of Benissa, Abel Cardona; as well as a large political representation from neighbouring towns.

As many as 12,000 vehicles pass through Benissa daily, which is virtually split into two halves by the N-332, which is especially dangerous for both pedestrians and cyclists due to its small width.

The layout of the bypass begins at 175.2 km of the N-332 and encircles the town in a northerly direction to re-link with the old N-332 at 179.7 km. It has been designed as a conventional road of 4.5 km in length, with one lane in each direction and additional lanes for slow vehicles in sections where required. Up to 200 homes will be affected, but this information has not yet been released.

The Benissa South exit will allow access to Benissa and connect with the CV750 to Jalón and Pinos. It will be a large roundabout located on the N-332 itself. Benissa North will be linked by a roundabout located on the existing N-332 at exit 63 of the AP7.

The aim is for the bypass to be open early in 2020.
