No clothes please, we're nudists

Controversy at Villajoyosa's Playa Racó del Conill

- By Shelley Liddell

A request by nudists at Villajoyosa's Playa Conill, clearly marked a nudist beach, for clothed bathers to remove their swimwear or go to another beach has not been welcomed by some non-nudist users.

FOR THE past 40 years, nudists have frequented Villajoyosa’s Racó del Conill beach - although it was only this year that the town hall finally put up signs to inform visitors that it is a beach of nudist tradition.

Nudist users have no problem with a few clothed users using the beach; the problems occur in July and August, when up to 80% of the beachgoers are not nudists, making the nudists feel uncomfortable. Clothed beachgoers were also taking panoramic photos to include the nudists and uploading them on Facebook and Instagram in direct violation of their privacy.

This summer, to avoid problems, the nudists had a whip-round and collected enough money to print informative leaflets, which they then handed out to those sun seekers who had chosen not to re- move their swimming gear.

The leaflets explained that nudism is a lifestyle characterised by nakedness in the enjoyment of natural spaces, that nudism is a personal choice, and they don't wish to impose it on anyone... but there are other lovely beaches in Villajoyosa for "textiles".

Nudists do not go nude on clothed beaches, so it was logical to request that visitors to the Racó de Conil nudist beach collaborate to preserve the nudist tradition, which was a polite suggestion to remove their clothes or themselves. Visitors were also asked not to take panoramic photos, only personal photos of themselves and their families.

A Spanish couple were not amused by the leaflet and felt they were being forced off the beach. But again, logically, if you are not a nudist, why go to a nudist beach?
