Benidorm's traffic chaos

Town hall commences roadworks simultaneously in different parts of the town

- By Shelley Liddell

ONCE again, Benidorm's roads look like building sites.

Planned work to improve some of the town's streets is causing problems for Benidorm's traffic.

Work is currently being carried out on major streets such as Almendros, Mercado, San José Artesanos, Gerona and Herrerías.

The biggest project is that of Avenida Almendros, which has a budget of €150,000, half of which is being subsidised by the government.

All architectonic barriers are being removed from the section between Calle San Antonio and Paseo de Colón. Trees will be planted and WiFi will be available in this area.

Work commenced this Monday on the lower section of Almendros, causing traffic jams where it joins Calle Mercado, which also has roadworks of its own consisting in the laying of new tarmac.

Calle Ramons Carratalá and San José Artesanos are also having new tarmac. As this is a quick two to three-day job, traffic in this area should now be back to normal.

Calle Herrerías is having improvements carried out to the tune of €70,000, which is being paid by a supermarket on the same street.

Here, all the pavement is being renovated, which means that one lane of the road has had to be closed to allow for pedestrian traffic. This is causing jams, as vehicles wishing to travel towards the town hall now have to go down Calle Emilio Ortuño to reach their destination.

Work has also commenced in Calle Gerona, from Orts Llorca to Esperanto, but as this is a pedestrian area anyway, it is not affecting traffic circulation.

Public works and mobility councillor José Ramón Gonzalez de Zarate has apologised to residents for the inconvenience caused by all the work.

He said that the decision was made to do it all now so that it is completed before the start of Benidorm fiestas, which begin the second weekend of November, as the “porrat” (market with traditional products) will be held at one of the streets currently undergoing improvements.
