PATIENT ATTACKS CALPE DOCTOR

- By Jo Pugh jpugh@cbnews.es

A YOUNG man was detained for psychiatric tests after he attacked a doctor at the medical centre in Calpe last Tuesday, breaking his elbow.

The frightening assault occurred at around 03.30, when the 26-year-old assailant, who is known to be violent, fought with another man outside a nightclub near La Fossa beach and badly bit his ear. He then convinced his victim to accompany him to Calpe medical centre for treatment.

When they arrived at the health centre, witnesses said they did not ring the bell for assistance, and the assailant immediately tried to force the door, shouting for help for his victim.

The accused forced his way inside, allegedly ‘breaking everything in his path’, destroying computers and telephones. He then broke the glass of the door to the emergency room. A doctor, 50, tried to stop the man, but the accused then attacked the doctor and broke his elbow. He also suffered wounds to his other arm.

A nurse ran from the building to the Guardia Civil build- ing, just 100 metres away, and officers ran to the health centre to apprehend the attacker.

The man has been detained by court order in a psychiatric unit at Dénia Hospital. The man who received the bite wound was treated and released without charge, as he had no involvement in the attack. The doctor was operated on in hospital, and is recovering from his injuries at home.

At the time the men broke into the health centre, two doctors, two nurses, a warden and two resident doctors were on duty. There were no security personnel.

Calpe police issued the following statement: “This individual has been arrested on several different occasions by the police in similar circumstances. We have had to forcefully intervene due to the violent nature and physical strength that he has. We hope that justice will be done with this person. We wish the health personnel who were attacked a speedy recovery.”
