Moraira tower ‘on verge of collapse’

THE WATCHTOWER which overlooks Moraira will be taken down “stone by stone” and rebuilt, the mayor of Teulada-Moraira, Carlos Linares, announced this week.

The 16th century tower “has a big crack that has enlarged with the passage of time, and could cause its collapse in the future," said Sr Linares.

With the danger of collapse becoming a serious reality, and a cash injection from EU funding, technicians from the council are currently working on the dismantling plans. As the plans have not yet been finalised, Sr Linares could not give a completion date, but said the work will take place throughout 2018.

The improvement of the Cap d'Or tower is a project that has been sidelined since Sr Linares took his position as mayor, however, as the tower is now in imminent danger, its renovation will begin shortly. He ruled out the installation of any lighting as bat colonies reside there.

Another project included in the archaeological improvement plan is centred on the cave called the Cova de la Cendra, where important Stone Age relics were found. The council aims to improve accessibility, as well as the safety of this enclave.

Sr Linares said that the intention of the council “is to make it much easier to visit. We want guided tours to be carried out.” This will also include security around the site as it has recently suffered from vandalism.

According to the mayor, the funds required amount to one million euros, which will be 50% financed by the EU, with Teulada-Moraira council paying the balance.
