Bruno hits the Costa
STORM Bruno brought galeforce winds to the Costa Blanca on Wednesday.
In Alicante, the highest winds hit the north of the province, as trees were uprooted and traffic signs brought down.
A gust of 137km/h was recorded in Benitachell and 132km/h in Benidorm.
The south of the province was also battered by the storm, with Alicante-Elche airport notching up 95km/h and Elche city 90km/h.
The emergency services reported that a 74-year-old woman was injured in Petrer when pieces of concrete blew off a building. She was treated in Elda General Hospital.
The highest wind speeds in Spain were recorded in the Basque Country, with a gust of 163km/h in Matxitako (Vizcaya), according to state news agency EFE.
Seven planes which were due to land at Bilbao airport had to be redirected or return to their airport of origin, including flights from Alicante and Valencia, according to state airport operator AENA.
Waves measuring up to 10 metres were recorded in Asturias, where the fishing fleets remained in port.
The Aragon Herald reported that the Portalet pass into France – used by many British motorists who drive from the Costas to the UK – was closed on Wednesday due to heavy snow.
Although windy weather is set to continue on the Costa Blanca, according to state weather agency AEMET, the temperatures will remain high.
TWO KILLED
Two people were killed in the Balearic Islands and Cataluña on Wednesday..
A 56-year-old man was blown off the balcony of his third-floor apartment in Segur de Calafell (Tarragona) as he was trying to repair a window.
The storm claimed another victim in Mallorca, where a 47year-old man died as he was windsurfing in heavy seas at Alcúdia.
