QUISI Bridge, which was doomed to be destroyed after an announcement last week, may just get a reprieve following intervention by the Valencia regional government.
They stated that they would undergo a reflection process to study the requirements necessary to strengthen the bridge, which has been affected by corrosion and cannot therefore support the new dual trains which have been purchased. The bridge lies close to Calpe and is part of the line between Benidorm and Dénia.
Benissa council, under whose jurisdiction the bridge lies, were obviously delighted at the decision, and released a statement saying the following:
‘The council expresses its satisfaction and sensitivity shown in relation to the undertakings to develop the emblematic Quisi Bridge. Following the public announcement yesterday by the Valencia regional government and FGV railways in connection with the intention of respecting the will of the town regarding the bridge, the council wishes to express its satisfaction regarding implying protection measures.
'Both the government and FGV have agreed to open a deliberation process, and actions required to progress with this infrastructure of great historical value. In this sense, and given the position of the council in this matter, the govern- ment has echoed willingness for unity with the neighbourhood of Benissa, and of course to provide the optimal technical conditions that guarantee the security and functionality of the line. Talks have now been opened to discuss all poss- ible alternative solutions.'
Those solutions to replacing the bridge include replacing or repairing the support pillars, which are 103 years old, or adding extra reinforcements to the structure.
