POLICE swooped on the Costa Blanca to arrest a 36-year-old man wanted for a vicious stabbing in a Liverpool nightclub where three people were injured.

Officers from Spain’s National Police raided a Jávea address to execute a European arrest warrant issued in relation to the December 2016 knife attack.

The unnamed suspect was held after police mounted an undercover surveillance operation on the address where he was believed to be living.

Three people were injured at the Soho nightclub in Liverpool when a heated dispute between a knifeman and another client sparked violence. It is alleged the suspect suddenly produced the weapon and repeatedly slashed his victim across the face.

And two others were hurt as they intervened and the incident ended when a bouncer managed to eject the knifeman from the premises in Concert Square, Liverpool.

The arrest was made on June 5 but details only emerged on Monday. The suspect will now appear before a judge in Madrid before being extradited to the UK.

Merseyside issued CCTV footage of the nightclub incident and appealed to the public to help in the hunt of the man believed to be responsible for the assaults.

A spokesman for the National Police said this week that the original victim needed 100 stitches as a result of the attack.

He said: “A 36-year-old British fugitive has been held on a European arrest warrant issued by the United Kingdom authorities; he is wanted by the British police and accused of seriously injuring three people with a knife.

“It all started in a Liverpool bar, the result of a dispute between two people which resulted in the arrested man allegedly taking out a knife and stabbing the other in the face.

“The other two casualties were customers who went to the victim’s aid and they were attacked by the man; the violence was only ended when a doorman managed to get him out of the premises.”

The spokesman said the two people trying to stop the attack received “light injuries” but added: “The main victim needed more than 100 stitches to his face and was left with both physical and mental scars.”

He said an operation was mounted in Jávea after police received information the suspect was living in the Marina Alta town.
