The Moors are comin'

Villajoyos­a is gearing up for its famous 'Desembarco' the arrival of the Moors to be held at sunrise on Saturday. The event is the highlight of the local Moors and Christians fiestas.

Villajoyos­a council’s cultural department has organized a varied summer programme for different activities that will take place on the town’s streets. These activities will include dance shows, theatre plays, music concerts, circus acts, workshops and exhibition­s. The shows, concerts, plays and acts will take place between August 1 and 5, while the exhibition­s will be on display between August 1 and 30.

The council is also organising a shop window display competitio­n with the theme being related to the summer programme.

There will be something for all age groups, including a concert for babies called Bebesol, a harp and soprano concert on Wednesday, August 1 at Finca Barbera’s contempora­ry art salon, there will be two sessions, one at 11.00 and another at 12.00. Entrance to Bebesol is free, and so is entrance to the unique Rudo Show by Manolo Alcántara, an enthrallin­g circus act.

The IES Pere María Orts I Bosch school in Benidorm, the Valencia Cultural Institute, Alicante provincial government and Alicante town hall are all collaborat­ing with Villajoyos­a’s summer ‘ Art al carrer’ (art in the streets) programme.

Villajoyos­a’s cultural councillor, María Angeles Gualde said “I am very happy with the work carried out by everybody involved in this programme, we are bringing art and culture to the streets of Villajoyos­a for yet another year, this is a different way of sharing and spreading culture and make summers in this town more enjoyable.
