Time called on beach bar plan
Angry residents say 'Chiringuito' would spoil an area of natural beauty
Angry residents say it would spoil an area of natural beauty
ANGRY Jávea residents have launched a protest against plans to build a beach bar alongside a protected piece of coastline saying the ‘chiringuito’ would spoil an area of natural beauty.
A private company has submitted plans for the remaining vacant plot between existing homes on Calle Ultramar, which links the Arenal beach with Cala Blanca – both areas popular with visitors.
The street runs along Montañar II, a “magnificent” rocky beach that remains in a “wild” and unspoilt state.
Residents have already collected over 1,500 signatures opposing the plan to build a bar on the plot and will gather on the vacant piece of land next week to make their feelings known.
Plans for the development have been submitted to central government’s coastal department for permission to build on the land at Calle Ultramar 69.
An earlier application to develop the site was rejected by the Valencia regional government in 2016 because plans failed to meet strict regulations – now an alternative has been submitted which was said to comply with rules and envisages an open building with terraces and pergolas.
Resident Maria Catalud said protesters had already instructed lawyers in a bid to halt the development.
“We oppose the plan because it is unsuitable for a residential area, because of the noise, the possible contamination of the beach and the harm to the environment,” she said.
“We do not want the plot to be used as a beach bar because of the potential damage it would cause. We are getting together for a meeting next week; probably on the plot itself...I think we have a very good chance of stopping this development.”
