Roman ruins contracted out
Calpe hires external company to preserve landmark Baños de la Reina roman site
CALPE council has hired an external company to carry out the maintenance and conservation of the roman archaeological site of Los Baños de la Reina. The contract, worth €14,989, includes the upkeep of perimeter fencing, path maintenance and waste collection.
The tender was been awarded to company Alebus Patrimonio Histórico for a period of four months, which may be extendable. T
he company has been asked to follow the procedures drawn up by technicians called the ‘basic action plan’, which takes the preservation of the site into consideration.
This is the first time that the ruins have a specific service allocated for its conservation.
Until now, volunteers from various universities, both locally and around the globe, were in charge of cleaning the vegetation of the area, who were occasionally supported by council gardening technicians.
The archaeological site of Los Baños de la Reina, recently declared as BIC (an asset of cultural interest), has an area of about 10,000 square metres, some 600 linear metres of perimeter fencing and a pedestrian path of 200 linear metres. Of Roman origin, and dating back to the first century, its value, archaeological importance, and the need to continue searching its remains entail the need to maintain the cleanliness and proper conservation of the area.
The site is occasionally open to the public in the summer, and will be announced on the Calpe tourism website.
