AP-7 wild boar crash sparks warnings

- By Samantha Kett skett@cbnews.es

WARNINGS to watch out for wild boar on the loose at night have been issued once again after a Dénia woman crashed into a pack of them on the AP-7 motorway in the dark.

At least 15 wild boar scattered across both lanes between the Oliva and Ondara exits effectively blocked the road altogether, and the driver did not see them until the last minute.

They appeared as she came round a bend at around 20.30 at night, and she did not have time to swerve.

Several drivers have been killed in wild boar crashes on La Safor and northern Marina Alta roads in recent years, but this time, the woman was lucky – she escaped with only minor bruising.

Despite every effort, she was unable to avoid hitting a mother wild boar and her five piglets.

Her car was driveable, but badly smashed, so she parked on the hard shoulder and rang the 112 emergency hotline.

Fortunately, there were no other cars on her side of the motorway, so she did not have to try to warn anyone of the sounder of boar blocking the carriageway.

Guardia Civil officers who rushed to the scene managed to chase away the remaining animals and clear the bodies of the casualties.

They arranged for the woman to go to hospital for a check-up, as she had bruised both arms when the air-bag activated and complained of back pain.

She criticised highways authorities for not setting up solid barriers along the AP-7 to prevent wild animals from getting onto the carriageway.
