Sinking road replaced

- By Alex Watkins awatkins@cbnews.es

WORK to restore Calle Salitre in Callosa de Segura, which has been closed due to subsidence caused by water pipe leaks in 2015 that forced four houses to be evacuated, is due to be finished on February 2.

It is the main road into the town centre from Orihuela and Redován and motorists have had to take a lengthy diversion around several back streets in the meantime.

The town hall was informed of the expected completion date by the concessionary companies Los Serranos SAU and Heliopol SAU.

Having fixed the ground by injecting 160 micro-piles into the street, which was the most costly and delicate part of the operation, the second phase is to replace the sewers and drinking water pipes with ones that meet current health and safety legislation before finally resurfacing the road. A town hall spokesman noted that the project included elements to measure vibrations and monitor the inclination of the homes that had to be propped up, which were not affected by the work, according to the company.

The four worst affected houses are inside the perimeter of the site and the owners of three have reached a compensation agreement with the town hall’s insurance company while only the fourth is pursuing legal action instead.

The provincial government is covering 75% of the cost of the work with a subsidy of €332,455.
