Blame it on the Brexit

- By James Parkes

In the light of recent events, I believe the Jackson Five classic needs to be reworded.

Michael (still black at the time) sang out 'Don't blame it on the sunshine (...)... blame it on the boogie’, but if he was living between Spain and the UK this week he would have probably had a change of heart.

Just lately, everything gets blamed, not on the boogie (wish it was) but on Brexit.

Hotels bookings are down next season...'That's because of Brexit'; supermarket prices go up...'Because people are stockpiling for Brexit'; property sales are not soaring...'because Brexit is making people wary'...and we could go on endlessly.

This week, 'blame it on Brexit' took a leap into the absurd in Benidorm as a British bar owner told the world (Facebook) that 'because of Brexit anti-British feeling' local police had ordered her to take down Union Jack bunting that went overhead from her bar to the opposite side of a narrow town centre street.

Of course the mighty The Sun saw the comment and immediately jumped on it. Hey, it had all their favourite ingredients: A story that allowed them to have a good bash at Benidorm and at the same time show how much these rotten Spaniards and all Europeans really hate us Brits so there were right in pushing to Leave.

So millions of its readers in the UK were told that Benidorm police hate Brits and it’s all because of Brexit.

The true story was that the bunting was a fire hazard and all bar owners - regardless of nationality, flags or creed were told to take them down.

That’s the story you get, the real one, the truth - but not what millions got back in the UK.

We won't blame it on the sunshine...just on The Sun.

The worst about this is that some freebies here, only too delighted to copy-cut-andpaste, have spread the same incorrect (and damaging) story around the Costas.

I all goes to show how hypersensitive we have become over Brexit. Anyone who says anything about us Brits now is because they don't like all the problems 'we' are causing by leaving the EU.

First of all, nearly half of 'we' didn't want this outcome. Secondly, I strongly believe 90% of 'we' are ashamed of the complete incompetence shown by politicians to wrap this up one way or another. And finally, many of 'we' just want to keep enjoying our lives here in Spain because quite frankly it is now were 'we' feel at home.

'We' are getting a bit sick and tired of the 'B' word but we fear we'll have to deal with it for several more years.

Meanwhile, at least we have something to blame all our evils on.

Brexit was probably the reason why JFK was shot, the origin of Spanish Influenza and of course, Brexit was behind Mad Cow Disease.

Taxis are on strike throughout Spain because of the impact of Brexit, the cold weather front is obviously coming into Spain because it's 'Brexiting' the UK and the socalled 'Tree Ebola' (Xylella Fastidiosa) that is decimating Costa almond trees was released by Brexit campaigners.

And we could go on...
