Eddie's Final Whistle

- By Eddie Cagigao Villarreal CF B 0 – 0 CD Castellon

2B Division, Group 3

Villarreal B stay top of the division for another week although they could only manage a point from their home game this week. Having lost the previous week against Hercules, they will need to get back to winning ways or the chasing pack will catch them up.

Match day January 22 – 27 Atletico Levante UD 1 – 0 UE Olot

A goal in the 63rd minute from the Levante forward Eneko, was enough to give the home side their first three points in 2019 having played five matches since the turn of the year, having drawn three and lost twice. The win keeps them in midtable – they are in 12th position with 26 points. But such is the evenness of this group that they are only three points above the relegation places. UE Olot, who are having their best ever season at this level, stay in 7th position with 30 points.

UE Cornella 3 – 1 Valencia CF Mestalla

Valencia Mestalla lost for the ninth time this season and are now in real trouble at the wrong end of the table. Going away to UE Cornella is always difficult as they are a very good club, especially at home. However, the precarious position of the Valencia CF reserve side this season made it even more so.

The home side opened the scoring in the 22nd minute and added to that goal twice in the second half, going 3-0 up after 66 minutes. It was only after that third goal that we got a reaction from Mestalla and although they pulled one back through Alex Blanco in the 71st minute, by then it was too little too late.

This has been a very poor season for the Valencia reserves. They are currently on 21 points, one place, and one point off the foot of the table. There is still time for them to turn the season around, however to do that they will need to start winning a few matches, something that they appear to be unable to do.

RCD Español 1 – 2 Hercules CF

After a poor run of results just before and just after the Christmas break, Hercules looked as if they had blown their Play Off chances for another season. However, having beaten the league leaders last week, this weekend they travelled up to Barcelona to take on Español B and came away with yet another three points after this excellent 1-2 away win.

The win, coupled with last weekends´ victory, moves them back into the running for a top four finish. They currently site in joint fourth position with 38 points, level with Lleida Esportiu.

Emana opened the scoring for the Alicante side in the 19th minute before Español equalised after 29 minutes before Pablo Iñiguez scored the winner for the visitors in the 69th minute to give his side all three points.

This is the big derby in the Castellon province where the capital city club, CD Castellon, travelled down the road to their more prestigious neighbours Villarreal CF B. Both teams came into this match with their spirits high – Villarreal as league leaders of the group and CD Castellon, although in the relegation places and needing the points for very different reasons, high on their two wins on the spin.

The match itself, played in front of a full house with massive support for the visitors, was very intense as you would expect from a local derby and more so as the Castellon support see Villarreal as the “young upstarts”. Both sides had chances with Castellon dominating the early part of the game whilst Villarreal came more into it as the match went on.

The share of the points was the correct result and leaves Villarreal still at the top of the group with 42 points and three points above both UD Cornella and Atletico Baleares and four points above both Hercules CF and Lleida Esportiu.

CD Castellon are third from bottom in the group (18th position) with 22 points although it is very close at the bottom of this group so everything is very much still to play for.

Ontinyent CF 0 – 0 CD Alcoyano

The points were shared at the weekend in this local derby as this fixture ended goalless once again. This is the fourth consecutive time this has happened between these two sides. The draw was no comfort to either side as both are too far down the table to feel confident of staying up.

The situation at Ontinyent is particularly difficult now. The Committee and the company that bought the club are at loggerheads with each other and the direct result is that funding has dried up, the players and staff are not being paid and the whole future of the club is now hanging on a thread.

A meeting is expected this week between the two parties in the hope of coming to a mutual solution. However, the reality is that both sides are entrenched in their own arguments and a swift outcome is difficult to imagine.

Both sets of fans demonstrated against their clubs at this game. The home fans asking for the Committee to resign and the visiting supporters asking for manager Vicente Mir to be sacked!

The draw leaves Ontinyent in 17th position and in the relegation zone. They have 23 points and three points above the bottom club (CD Teruel with 20 points). The draw for Alcoyano leaves them in 13th position with 25 points but only two points above the relegation places.

3rd Division

Orihuela took full advantage at the weekend by winning their away match and in doing so, added to the draw between Olimpic Xativa and La Nucia; take over at the top of the division. Orihuela have 44 points whilst La Nucia are in second spot with 43.

Atletico Saguntino are third with 42 with Olimpic Xativa now down to fourth position, the last of the Play Off places, with 41 points. CD Eldense and Jove Español, in joint fifth place with 37 points, appear to be the only other sides capable to taking one of the top four places.

It was a good weekend for those clubs at the bottom end of the table. Paiporta, in 20th position, recorded their third win of the season after beating Novelda and although they stay at the foot of the table, they go up to 14 points.

They are four points behind both Torre Levante and Paterna who both picked up points with Torre Levante getting a draw and Paterna winning their away match at Crevillente.

After their latest defeat, Novelda remain on place above the relegation zone in 17th position with 19 points.
