Calpe beauty spot enhanced
New footpaths around salt lake are now complete
THE REGENERATION and creation of footpaths around the Las Salinas salt lake in Calpe have now been completed, allowing visitors to enjoy the large variety of flora and fauna which can be admired. The works, which included the removal of an unauthorised waste tip, cost €80,000.
The lake shore now benefits from a signposted perimeter path, marked by signage 1.2 metres high along the main circular route, as well as two foot bridges and drainage ditches to divert water from the route in adverse weather.
A 163-metre-long walkway has also been installed in the northern area of the lake in order to direct visitors away from bird breeding areas which require greater protection.
The programme to improve the footpath around the lake only took a matter of months, and is considered to be crucial for ornithological tourism, as migratory birds are often seen by avid birdwatchers. To aid this type of tourist, different posters have been installed with information regarding the variety of birds which can be seen, and their greater or lesser presence depending on the time of year. To assist birdwatchers, a wooden hide has also been erected.
Finally, invasive vegetation was removed which could possibly have damaged the eco system of the lake.
Las Salinas, which is otherwise known as ‘Flamingo lake’, proves itself to be a popular tourist attraction due to these fowl usually being quite close to the shore.
