The attack occurred at 14.00 at Pueblo Centro urbanisation.

According to a spokesman for Torrevieja town hall, the husband allegedly used ‘different weapons, including an axe and a hammer’, to attack his spouse and then ‘threw her down the stairs’.

He explained that neighbours of the couple rang the emergency services and Guardia Civil officers rushed to the scene and were able to arrest the man.

She had wounds to her head and other parts of her body.

“This is another case of the blight which is men’s violence against women.”

He explained on Sunday that fortunately the victim was responding to treatment and ‘evolving favourably’, although still in a serious condition.

A demonstration was held outside Torrevieja town hall on Sunday, led by the mayor, which was attended by a number of local councillors and dozens of residents. They expressed their disgust and repulsion at the attack.

Sr Dolón noted: “This is a shameful act and it reminds us that we have to redouble our efforts to ensure that such a thing cannot happen again.”

He told journalists that he had been contacted by vicepresident of the Valencia region, Mónica Oltra, who offered her support.

The 83-year-old man appeared in court on Tuesday and was remanded in custody.

He faces charges of murder.
