CB Walkers in Altea

-

Altea is not an obvious choice perhaps for a walking group, but thanks to our leader, Mike Donovan, 21 of us had a most enjoyable day for he had taken the time to explore the area and come up with a really interesting and original route.

We met at the car park near the market and walked along a riverside trail giving good views of the Bernia Mountains, briskly for the morning was cold and then turned off for a mystery tour of the campo. We followed winding paths and county lanes past orange groves and fincas, a world away from towns and busy roads.

By now the sun was out and we removed our outer layers and sought out the shade of the pine trees on a little hill and wondered where on earth we were. Mike knew of course and spirited the group into the old part of Altea, where in a cobbled square below the old church we admired the lovely view of the coast and were serenaded by a singer guitarist. Then Mike led us down a through a maze of alleyways past stone cottages to see an ancient watermill, a tower, and the thick walls built to defend the town against Moorish pirates.

And so we reached the seafront where we found a welcoming bar and enjoyed a drink and a chat with some of the many new walkers who had joined us for the day and will hopefully do so again. Why don't you ?

We have an easy walk every Wednesday and a harder walk on Saturdays for those lucky enough to be still fit. You will find out programme on www.costablancawalks.com
