Eddie's Final Whistle

- By Eddie Cagigao

2B Division, Group 3 Match day February 2 – 3 Valencia CF Mestalla 0 – 1 Atletico Levante UD

A goal deep into injury time at the end of the second half gave visitors all three points and condemned the Valencia reserves to drop down into bottom place in the table for the first time this season.

This was a real local derby match with both clubs based in Valencia City and both reserve sides from La Liga teams. The fact that both of these teams needed the points added a little extra spice to the match.

The result leaves Valencia Mestalla in real trouble at the foot of the table. They are in 20th position with 21 points from their 23 matches played. The win for Levante moves them up into 12th position with 29 points and six points above the relegation zone.

Hercules CF 2 – 3 SD Ebro

Hercules Alicante missed a magnificent opportunity to climb into the top four places after they were beaten 2-3 at home by a SD Ebro side who move up into 9th position with 31 points. With the top four clubs all dropping points at the weekend, it is fair to say that Hercules will not have too many weekends like this. But a combination of poor finishing, bad luck in front of goal (a continual problem all season) and a couple of injuries during the game, all conspired to allow the visitors to take all three points. The home side also had one of their substitutes red carded from the bench!!

The defeat leaves Hercules in fifth position, just one place outside of the promotion Play Off places, with 38 points.

CD Castellon 1 – 2 RCD Español B

All the good form shown by CD Castellon in the last few games, went out of the window this weekend as they suffered a 1-2 home defeat against a well organised RCD Español B side in what was a very disappointing match. The defeat means they drop to 19th in the league, just one place off the bottom.

The visitors were well worth their victory scoring a goal in each half to go 0 - 2 ahead before the home side pulled one back in the 73rd minute. Castellon have been busy in the winter transfer window so lets´ hope they start putting a few wins together and climb out of the relegation places.

CD Alcoyano 2 – 2 Villarreal CF B

The league leaders, Villarreal B took the lead twice in this game but both times the home side managed to equalise, the second goal from Alcoyano coming Deep into injury time at the end of the second half, giving them a very valuable a merited share of the points. Villarreal took the lead in the 12th minute before Pino drew the home side level on 24 minutes. In the second half, Akale once again gave the visitors the lead with a goal in the 50th minute before Eldin popped up very late in the game to grab the second equaliser. Alcoyano will be thankful for the point as it keeps them just above the relegation places. Currently they are in 15th position with 26 points – three points above the relegation places. The draw for Villarreal was, as it turned out, not all bad as none of the top four sides managed a win between them. Villarreal stay in top position with 43 points, three points ahead of second placed Atletico Baleares, four points ahead of Cornella in third place and five points ahead of Lleida in fourth position.

SD Ejea 2 – 1 Ontinyent CF

Ontinyent are another club who have been busy in the transfer window. They have a much changed squad and have released a lot of players, mainly due to their dire financial situation which has only this week, been settled for the time being as am agreement has been reached between the club and some of their more affluent supporters, to fund the club until the end of the season.

This match started well for them as they took the lead after just two minutes. However, that was as good as it got for Ontinyent who saw the home side score a goal in each half to take all three points which leaves Ontinyent in a real mess and deep in the relegation mire.

The win for SD Ejea moves them up into 10th place with 30 points whilst Ontinyent are in 17th position (one of the automatic relegation places) with 23 points. It looks like it will be a struggle right through to the end of the season.

3rd Division

The two top clubs in this group, Orihuela and La Nucia, both won again at the weekend so stay in the top two places. Orihuela comfortably defeated struggling Torre Levante (4 – 0) and stay top of the group with 47 points. They are one point better off than second placed La Nucia who took the points with a 2-0 home win against Rayo Ibense. Atletico Saguntino are in third position with 43 points but missed a great chance to close the gap after they were held to a 0-0 home draw by a mid-table Crevillente side who have struggled of late. The final Play Off place (4th) is held by Olimpic Xativa who have 42 points after their 0-0 away draw at Novelda, another side who are struggling this season.

Of the sides outside of the top four places, CD Eldense are in fifth spot following their narrow 1-0 win against Elche Ilicitano. They have 40 points and are three points above both Atzeneta and Jove Español.

At the bottom end of the table, Paiporta are in 20th position and seven points outside the safety places. They lost again at the weekend and have 14 points from their 23 matches played. The two sides above Paiporta, Torre Levante and Paterna, also lost at the weekend so remain on 18 points each. Novelda, in 17th position with 20 points and Elche Ilicitano in 16th place with 22 points will need a few more points soon to try and break away from those clubs below them.

What is almost certain is that at least one of the clubs in the relegation pack will put a run of results together. This happens every season and will, almost certainly happen again this term.

Regional Preferente Groups Group 1

The top four clubs in this group all won at the weekend so there is no change in the table. UD Puzol are still top with 45 points. They have a four point lead over second placed side CD Almazora who have 41 points. CD Onda and CD Cabanes are both fighting for the third spot. Both sides have 40 points with CD Burriana, in 5th position, on 37 points drawring away at struggling Sant Jordi.

CF Borriol are all but relegated. They have just one point and lost for the 20th time (from 21 matches played) this season. Above them are Alqueries on 12 points and Sant Jordi who have 14 points.

Group 2

The top three in this group all drew at the weekend so it is same as for another week. Recambios Colon are top with 53 points and they have an eightpoint advantage over second placed Ribarroja who have 45 points. Better still for Recambios is that they have an 11-point lead over the third placed teams, CD Utiel and Torrent CF, who are both on 42 points. It will be three from a top four that will make the end of season Play Offs´ as fifth placed Buñol are on 33 points and will need something special in what remains of the season to catch any of the top four.

At the bottom of this group, CD Serranos are where they have been for most of the season, in last position with just 8 points. Above them are Mislata CF on 12 points and Castellar-Oliveral who are on 13 points.

Group 3

Only one of the top six teams managed a win at the weekend. This allows Beniganim to close the gap with the group leaders, Castellonense, to three points. Castellonense drew and they have 43 points with Beniganim on 40 points in second place. Both Muro and Tavernes are in joint third place with 39 points following their draws at the weekend. CD Denia on 38 points and CD Javea on 37 points are still looking to climb into the top three.

Gandia will need something special to avoid relegation this season. They are bottom of the group with just 12 points but are 10 points outside the first safety place. CD Monte-Sion, with 19 points and CD Contestano with 20 points are just above them but all three in the relegation places.

Match day February 22 – 10 Group 4

Intercity march on and, after a comfortable victory at the weekend, are simply too strong for this group. In the summer they got a squad for the 3rd division as it looked odds on at one stage (until the FA stepped in and scuppered their plans), that they would take the place of Novelda. Well that strong squad is top of the group with 55 points and a massive 12 points ahead of second placed Hercules B who have 43 points. CD Almoradi are in third position after their home defeat by Villajoyosa who now join them in joint third position with 40 points, the same points tally as both Independiente Alicante and Universidad Alicante. Elda Industrial, on 39 points, are the only side with a chance of being in the top three.

At the bottom there is no chance of any of the clubs down there jumping anywhere near the top three. Villena lost again and are all but relegated with 8 points. Above them are CD Torrevieja who have once again had nonstop problems both on and off the field with lots of players leaving the club due to unpaid wages etc? They have 16 points and are two points below both Aspe and Benidorm, whom they play this weekend in a real “six pointer”.
