New university branch

- By Jo Pugh jpugh@cbnews..es

CALPE has become the twelfth branch of the University of Alicante after the rector, Manuel Palomar and the deputy mayor of the town, Ana Sala, formally signed an agreement to create the new university extension in Casa Nova. The event was also attended by the general secretary of the university, Esther Algarra and Carles Cortés, the vice-rector of culture, sports and languages.

“For the University of Alicante, having a seat in Calpe is an extraordinary opportunity that allows us to expand our activity and locations in the territory and society. We can better define the contents of the activities that should be developed in the town so that these have an impact on the social and economic fabric.” Said Palomar.

Casa Nova, the emblematic fortified farmhouse of the sixteenth century acquired and rehabilitated by Calpe council, will host academic, cultural and social activities organised and scheduled by the University of Alicante. The new university branch will share space with the Campus of Business Excellence, a building for hosting different training, research or cultural activities that are planned.

Ana Sala expressed her satisfaction that “Calpe is finally a university branch” and explained that “with this agreement we will now have a stable programme throughout the year which will allow us to develop activities that will benefit all of our population”.

“Ahead of summer we hope to present the programming of the new branch for the next year, with a broad content of both cultural, training and research activities.” said Cortés, the vice-rector.

Located around two kilometres from the town centre, Casa Nova has far reaching views over the coastline. It dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries and was renovated last year.
