Dog mistreatment protests in Teulada and Orba
Animal rights defenders campaign for suffering podencos
ANIMAL rights activists are moving their protest against mistreated hunting dogs to Orba this morning (Friday), following a demonstration in front of Teulada town hall on 1 February which may now have proved fruitless due to political instability.
More than 50 animal lovers lobbied against the suffering of Podenco huntings dogs at the Teulada rally, fronted by Grace Boas of the animal protection association, Pluto.
The case regards a hunter who is keeping 14 dogs in what Pluto describe as ‘miserable’ conditions. Although the case was previously reported in May 2018, the town hall has allegedly not prevented the obvious animal abuse.
The demonstrators unsuccessfully demanded an opinion from Mayor Carlos Linares, who purportedly did not purof sue alleged violations of animal welfare regulations.
With Linares, admired for improving other aspects in his constitiency now stating he will step down as mayor at the end of May, the protests may well have fallen on deaf ears.
A similar scandal seems to be occurring at another location in Orba where today’s lobby will take place - with the local town hall commenting on the allegations and pointing out that the videos and photos do not reflect the current state affairs, of which photographic evidence was obtained. The town hall said that they, the local police, and Seprona have dealt with the allegations.
The activists pointed not only to the untold suffering of many hunting dogs, but also to the dangers that can emanate from unpleasant hygienic conditions.
Dangerous infectious diseases, such as the highly contagious parvovirus could spread from there. The animal rights activists called for the number of dogs in the community to be recorded, and for the hunters to be required by law to chip their dogs.
At the previous demonstration, Boas did not mince her words and the allegations towards Teulada council, and she sincerely hopes that on this occasion a more sympathetic stance will be taken.
