Success for 'Spread Some Sunshine Project'
What a perfect recipe for a fundraising evening: a great venue – Case El Campo (near Javea/Benitachell), tasty food options, music man Mr Matt Mason and some kind and generous friends.
The charity event took place on February 1 and everyone joined in the fun and boogied late into the night, helping us to raise €870.
The ‘Spread some Sunshine Project’ raises funds to ensure children in care in The Anula Wijerama Home for Girls and The Baransuriya Home for Boys on SW Coast of Sri Lanka have food to eat and other basic essentials.
Helen Davis (pictured below) who founded the project just over a year ago gave an insight into where the money has been spent over the past year and the forthcoming plans for 2019.
She said, "Thanks to the donated items we receive we raise funds from selling items on for commission or at rastros, along with some fun events, I am really proud to say we were able to send almost €20,000 to the homes."
Just a few of the things the project has achieved in 2018 are:
Delivery of food each month
Refurbishing the Boys Bedrooms, including new wardrobes and mosquito nets
Replacing kitchen equipment
Introducing carpentry lessons, art and craft classes
Providing new clothes and shoes
Rebuilding of the Buddhist Shrine
Creating a Christmas to remember
Looking to the future
In 2019 we are working to introduce regular health checks in both homes – eyes, ears and teeth. The children’s day is quite simply just going to school, so we are hoping to introduce some outside activities, such as volleyball, weights, circuit training
We shall be supporting the very special Pamoda family four children, one with severe kidney problems and three with severe disabilities – we will help cover transport costs to hospital, medication, bandages, incontinent pads and equipment, organise and cover costs for local trips to the river and park.
Our money goes such a long way in Sri Lanka, we can achieve so much.
