Eddie's Final Whistle

- By Eddie Cagigao

2B Division, Group 3 Match day February 24 – 10

Valencia CF Mestalla 2 – 0 UE Olot

The Valencia reserve side, Mestalla, took all three points from a game which they dominated from start to finish and in doing so, are in 18th position with 24 points. It is also the first time since the opening game of the season that Mestalla have won a home game this season. A goal in each half was no more than they deserved against an UE Olot side who are going through a poor patch of results, although thanks to their early season form, they are well away from the relegation area in 7th position with 33 points.

Atletico Levante UD 1 – 2 CF Badalona

Despite dominating most of this game, Atletico Levante was unable to capitalise of their general possession and ended up on the wrong end of a 1-2 reverse. The result leaves Levante in 12th place with 29 points whilst Badalona are one place below them but on the same points tally.

The visitors took the lead with an own goal scored by Levante defender Rulo, after nine minutes. Despite the setback, Levante still pushed forward and were unfortunate on a number of occasions not to equalise. Badalona increased their lead after 65 minutes before the home side did manage to pull one back through Eneko in the 77th minute. Despite a huge effort from Levante in the final minutes, Badalona held out for the win and the three points.

CD Teruel 0 – 0 Hercules CF

Hercules had a superb opportunity to climb back into the Play Off places as they travelled to the leagues´ bottom side, CD Teruel, knowing that a win would move them up into third position. However, it was the same old problems that have plagued the side all season – a lack of firepower up front – that once again saw them allow another opportunity to vanish. The result was better for CD Teruel who with this point, actually move one place off the bottom of the table with 24 points to their name. Hercules on the other hand, stay in fifth place with 39 points, the same points total as fourth placed Lleida.

CD Ebro 0 – 0 CD Castellon

Having lost at home last week after run of five unbeaten matches, CD Castellon needed a win from this away match in Zaragoza where they faced local side CD Ebro, who had won at Hercules the previous week and are in the top ten of this group.

However, despite giving it their all, Castellon could only manage a draw from this game which, at this stage of the season and knowing they are in last place in the league, is simply not good enough. The point apiece keeps CD Ebro in 9th position with 32 points whilst CD Castellon stay at the foot of the table on 23 points, one points below CD Teruel, whom they play this coming weekend at home where anything other than a win will put a massive dent in their chances of climbing out of the relegation places.

RCD Español B 0 – 1 CD Alcoyano

A single goal in the 46th minute from Alcoyano player Braulio was enough to give his side all three points and in doing so, stop a run six matches without a win. The three points also moves them up to 14th position with 29 points and out of the relegation zone, although they are still too close to the drop zone for comfort.

Villarreal CF B 0 – 0 SD Ejea

It is now four matches since Villarreal B have managed a victory. This run of results, with the latest being this 0-0 draw at home against SD Ejea, has cut their lead down to just one points.

Despite having most of the possession and the better chances, once again Villarreal were not great in front of goal against opponents who were well organised, very disciplined in defence and resolute in midfield. Unless Villarreal end their current run of form, they could well be fighting to avoid fallin gout of the Play Off places in the coming weeks.

Ontinyent CF 3 – 1 CE Sabadell FC

Ontinyent won their sixth match of the season against a Sabadell side who started the better of the two sides, even taking the lead in the 19th minute. But two goals before the break, from Soler and Juanan, gave the home side a 2-1 lead at the break before David Torres, in the 70th minute, scored the definitive goal of the game to give his side all three much needed points.

The win for Ontinyent allows them to climb out of the relegation zone for the first time in many weeks. They sit in 16th position with 26 points and although they are still in trouble, I am sure everybody at their El Clariano ground has been lifted by this win.

3rd Division

League leaders Orihuela continue their excellent run of form with another win, this time 1-3 away at Villarreal “C”. The win keeps them at the top of the group with 50 points, three points ahead of second placed La Nucia who were held to a goalless draw away at Torre Levante. Atletico Saguntino are in 3rd position. They took the points with a 0-1 win away at Eldense. Saguntino now have 46 points whilst CD Eldense stay in 5th position with 40 points. Olimpic Xativa also won so they stay in fourth place with 45 points. It is looking more and more as if the top four in this group will end the season in the Play Offs´. Only perhaps Eldense IF they can start winning again, appear to have a chance of catching those four teams above them although Eldense are FIVE points behind the fourth placed side.

At the other end of the table, none of the bottom five teams lost at the weekend, something that has not happened before this season. The bottom club, Paiporta CF, won their home game against Jove Español therefore putting a massive dent in their opponents Play Off chances, and although still at the foot off the table, they now have 17 points. CF Torre Levante took a point against La Nucia. They are still just one place off the foot of the table but now go up to 19 points. The two sides above Torre Levante, in 18th and 17th positions, are Paterna and Novelda. Paterna won away whilst Novelda shared the points away at Rayo Ibense. Both have 21 points.

Another comfortable victory for Intercity San Juan leaves them on 58 points and 12 points clear of second placed Hercules B who have 46 points. Almoradi are in third place but level on points with Villajoyosa, Independiente de Alicante and Universidad Alicante. All four clubs have 43 points.

At the other end of the league table, Villena with 8 points are all but relegated unless they can produce a minor miracle. One place off the bottom are CD Torrevieja who appear to be in freefall.
