Challenge of classic musical

- By Jack Troughton

Javea Players are returning to the world of musical theatre and rising to the challenge of performing the award-winning classic My Fair Lady.

The cast and crew are busy with rehearsals to bring the much-loved story of Professor Henry Higgins and Eliza Doolittle to life on the Costa Blanca.

My Fair Lady will be performed at the Union Musical in Gata de Gorgos next month and will also go on the road for a show at the Capitol Theatre in Rojales in April.

Director Cherry Cabban is thrilled at progress as the show takes shape and thanked the specialists for the help she was receiving. “We are in the excellent hands of Aileen Lightfoot our musical director and choreographer Graciela Kaplan; and we have a great cast.”

A member of Javea Players since 1996, her love for theatre goes back to watching her mother tread the boards while her father ‘did’ lights; moving to Madrid in 1974, she joined the Madrid Players and later in Barcelona was a founder member of The Theatre Club – in Brussels she ran Middle School drama at St John’s School for 220 students each week which was “exhausting but stimulating!”

And in Javea, Cherry has directed some 20 plays for the group. “I have always wanted to direct My Fair Lady and have loved every minute of the challenge.”

Trained architect John Reynolds has worked in the UK, America and Germany. He has designed and built theatre sets since he was a teenager and My Fair Lady is his 11th design for Javea Players.

He said: “Most people will know My Fair Lady as a big musical with grand sets. The limitations of the theatre at Gata meant that I had to capture the essence of the show in a simple way, allowing the director and actors free rein to tell the story.”

First night of the show is in Gata and a gala performance on Monday March 25, followed by cava and finger food supplied by Javea’s La Cocina Restaurant; tickets are €20. Tuesday to Friday nights at Gata, March 26 to March 29, also start at 19.30 and tickets are €16 – there is also a matinee on Saturday March 30, starting at 16.00.

The show is also being performed at Capitol Theatre, Rojales, on Saturday April 13, at 19.00. Tickets are €12.

Tickets went on sale for the show on February 7, visit www.javeaplayers.com for more information.
