Road runners in Javea

- By Jack Troughton

The running season in the Marina Alta opens this weekend with the 30th Volta a Peu de Xabia on Sunday, February 24 – 12 months ago more than 2,000 people took part.

A distance of 10km takes athletes on a route from the sports hall Palau d’Esports in Javea Port, along the coast to the Arenal and La Caleta before returning the same way.

It is the first scoring round of the popular Marina Alta circuit and for the second year the run is dedicated to Jose Albi, one of the Javea cyclists who sadly lost his life in a tragic accident in May 2017.

Representatives of the athletics club Club de Atletisme Llebeig have again organised the event, and met with Mayor Jose Chulvi and councillor for sports Vicente Colomer to unveil the 2019 poster – and the t-shirt that will be presented to the first 1,600 runners to cross the finish line.

Registration is via www.somesport.com; athletes can enter the Javea run or the whole circuit. There are children’s events too – youngsters under 14 can enter for free – but they should be officially entered in order to be covered by the event’s insurance. Parking restrictions around the area of the sports hall come into force on Saturday night. From 9am on Sunday traffic restrictions will be imposed along Avenida Mediterraneo, Avenida Libertad, and from 10am on Avenida Ultramar.

Police recommend drivers use Avenida de Pla to access the Arenal and urbanisations to the south of the town.
