Present perfect practice
It’s always an interesting challenge finding ways of practising the language that we learn.
Here is a piece of text I wrote a couple of years ago which is a summary of that year.
It was written in December, which is a time when everyone takes stock of the past year, including the television channels.
It’s when they tell you that so-and-so died this summer and you are absolutely amazed because you thought he’d been dead at least ten years already.
So here is my own summary of the year, but I hasten to add that this is not going to be an exercise in translation or any other kind of boring revision.
All you have to do is read it, and hopefully you will understand every, or nearly every, word. That’s the idea, anyway.
Este año he trabajado mucho, como siempre. Ha sido más difícil porque la gente tiene muchos problemas económicos ahora, por la famosa 'crisis'. Mis hijas han estudiado en el instituto y han aprobado sus exámenes excepto uno o dos que siempre causan dificultades. Una de mis hijas ha viajado a Sudamérica para visitar a su padre y mi otra hija ha trabajado en un supermercado para ganar dinero y para tener experiencia de trabajo.
Este año no he visitado Gales, donde vive mi madre, pero mi madre ha venido España. Ha pasado una semana con nosotras en San Pedro, durante Semana Santa. Vamos a visitar a mi madre en Gales el año que viene, probablemente por una semana. Vamos a Londres también para visitar a mi hermana. Mis hijas no conocen Londres mucho, así que es una buena oportunidad para ellas.
Mi gata ha tenido un año muy normal. Ha comido, ha dormido, ha comido, ha dormido, ha comido, ha dormido.
Este otoño ha sido una época un poco complicada para mí. He decidido cambiar mi forma de trabajar. He cerrado mi academia en San Pedro y he llevado mis cursos y otros eventos a diferentes sitios. El año que viene voy a seguir haciendo lo mismo. Así que, quizás un día nos veremos por allí. My life has moved on a little since that was written, but I notice that 'la crisis' is still affecting us all! Let’s hope it comes to an end soon!
