Eddie's Final Whistle

- By Eddie Cagigao

2B Division, Group 3 Match day February 25 – 17 CF Badalona 1 – 0 Valencia Mestalla Valencia Mestalla fell to their 11th defeat of the season after this away game at Badalona. The result means that they fall to the bottom of the table for the first time this season. The home side took the points with the only goal of the game, which they scored in the 59th minute to send the Valencia CF reserve side home empty handed. Lleida Esportiu 2 – 0 Atletico Levante UD

It was always going to be difficult to try and get anything from this match. Lleida are challenging for a Play Off place whilst Levante will be happy to finish the season in mid table obscurity. Two goals in the second half gave the home side the points leaving them in 3rd place with 42 points. Levante, after this defeat, their 10th defeat of the season, are in 13th position with 29 points. Hercules CF 1 – 0 UE Cornella

An excellent win by Hercules against a UE Cornella side who started the day one place above them in the table. A single goal in the 33rd minute of the match from Chechu Flores was enough to give Hercules the three points and move them into 4th position, the final Play Off position in this group. They now have 42 points, the same points tally as 3rd placed Lleida and two points more than Cornella who are now in fifth position – one place outside the Play Off places. On the down side, Hercules CF will almost certainly be fined by the FA after the match official realised that both penalty areas at the Rico Perez Stadium were smaller than regulatory size. This meant ground staff had to try and erase the penalty area lines and re-paint them to the right size (bigger size). The amazing thing is that Hercules have been playing with the goal areas this size all season but none of the match officials – or opponents – have realised. CD Castellon 1 – 1 CD Teruel

After this draw, both sides jump up one place in the table. Castellon are one place off the bottom of the table, although on the same points tally as bottom side Valencia Mestalla (24 points) with Teruel one place (18th) and one points (25 points) above them.

Jairo, on 31 minutes, gave the home side the lead before the visitors snatched a 71st minute equaliser. CD Alcoyano 0 – 1 CD Ebro

Alcoyano were surprised by a 14th minute goal from their opponents, a goal which was enough to take all three points. The home side were also guilty of missing a second half penalty which would have moved them further away from the danger zone.

This result leaves Alcoyano in 14th position with 29 points but still too close to the drop zone to feel comfortable. CD Ebro on the other hand, are now up to 7th position with 35 points and will clearly achieve their pre-season objective on staying in this group for another season. CE Sabadell FC 1 – 1 Villarreal CF B

The poor form of late from the long-time league leaders, Villarreal B, means that they have not only been caught by the chasing group but have now been knocked off their perch as Atletico Baleares jump above them into top spot.

Villarreal B have gone off the boil of late, especially in attack where their forwards have been finding it very difficult to score. In this match, they had to come from behind to grab a 71st minute equaliser to take a share of the points. The draw means Villarreal B are in second position with 45 points, one place behind the new leaders, Atletico Baleares, who have 46 points. CF Peralada 0 – 1 Ontinyent CF

This was a massive three points for Ontinyent as they try and evade relegation after what has been, so far, a turbulent season both on and off the pitch. Both sides were in dire need of the points for the same reason – both are struggling around the relegation zone.

The visitors dominated this game and were unfortunate to only win by a late goal scored by defender Julen Monreal in the 83rd minute.

The win leaves Ontinyent in 15th position with 29 points, just three points above the relegation places. Non Valencia based clubs UB Conquense 0 – 1 Atletico Baleares

They have 53 points following their win at the weekend and, more importantly, the fact that second placed La Nucia, on 48 points, were held to a draw at home. Third position is held by Atletico Saguntino with 47 points with Olimpic Xativa in fourth place with 46 points. Apart from Orihuela winning, the three sides´ below them could only manage to draw their matches.

Paiporta are in 20th and last place in this group. They have 17 points after their latest defeat. One place above them are Torre Levante who lost a great chance to climb out of the bottom three places after they were beaten by Novelda who are just outside the relegation places (17th). Leaders UD Puzol have 51 points with second placed CD Onda, who hammered the bottom club 9-1 at the weekend, on 46 points. The battle for the final Play Off place is hotting up with 3 points separating the next 6 sides. Currently, that all important third position is held jointly by CD Almazora and CD Cabanes who both drew their matches at the weekend. At the other end of the table, hapless CF Borriol are all but relegated. Just 2 points to show for their 23 matches played leaves them relegated realistically. CF Sant Jordi (15 points) and Alqueries CF (16 points9 are the other two sides likely to join them unless they can pull something out of the hat from their final eleven matches. Recambios have 55 points with Ribarroja on 48 points and the 7 points lead looks good enough for them to end the season in at least one of the top three places. CD Utiel and Torrent CF, in joint 3rd position with 46 points, look like fighting it out for the one place available for the Play Offs´. Despite a fight back since the Christmas break, CD Serranos stay at the bottom of the table with 11 points. One place and three points above them are UD Castellar-Oliveral who have 14 points with Mislata CF, occupying the final relegation position with 18 points. Although bottom two look in real danger, especially CD Serrano who are 9 points behind the 15th placed side (Aldaia and Juventud Barrio Cristo), Mislata still have a good chance of climbing out of the relegation zone. Outside of the top three Play Off places, Muro CF are in 4th position with 43 points, CD Javea have 41 points and Tavernes, in 6th position with 40 points are the realistic challengers for a top three finish. The gap at the bottom of the table increases week after week. The groups bottom side, CF UE Gandia (18th position) have 12 points and are now 13 points behind the fourth bottom side (which is the first of the safety places). One place of the bottom of the group are CD Monte-Sion with 19 points and above them, in the final relegation place, are CD Contestano on 20 points. Villajoyosa move up into 3rd position, level on points (46) with Independiente Alicante. These top four are followed by Universidad Alicante on 44 points and CD Almoradi, who have slipped up in their last few matches and are now in 6th position with 43 points.

At the “wrong” end of the table, Villena are in 18th position with 8 points. Above them are CD Torrevieja who have 16 points and Aspe UD on 18 points.
