All ready for Easter

Thousands of tourists expected

- By Irena Bodnarec and Jo Pugh

COME rain or shine, coastline towns are making sure all is in peak condition to welcome hoards of Easter holidaymakers this weekend.

Benidorm's beaches were already jam-packed over the weekend with holidaymakers taking full advantage of the glorious weather, as our main photo shows.

With many UK schools already on holiday, there were plenty of families taking advantage of an Easter getaway.

Over the course of this week, many domestic tourists will also descend on the resort for ‘Semana Santa’ and each evening there will be religious parades leading up to Easter Sunday.

To ensure all goes well, last thursday night, 40 National Police carried out a joint security operation with a number of other law enforcement units in Benidorm’s popular nightclub district in the Rincon de Loix, where they inspected six different premises.

Four individuals were arrested on immigration issues and 28 searches carried out for possession of illegal drugs and firearms.

Alfaz gets Albir ready... and its pine blessed.

Albir beach in Alfaz del Pi is ready for the influx of Easter visitors the mayor Vicente Arqués declared last week.

The beach has been levelled out for sunbathers, walkways installed leading from the promenade down to the sea, bins installed and maintenance work carried out around the beach library, toilets and promenade.

Lifeguards started last Saturday and will be on duty from 11.00 until 18.00 till April 23, and from then onwards every weekend until June when a daily service will resume.

Economically it is a very important time for local businesses, particularly the hospitality industry and the council has done its upmost to ensure that the town is presented at its best.

The newly planted 6 metre pine tree outside the church in Alfaz del Pi was blessed by the parish priest Miguel Ángel Schiller last Sunday – on what was Palm Sunday, an important day in the church calendar. This is the towns seventh pine, with the first planted back in 1786.

Benissa cleans up coast

The public cleaning company, Benissa Impuls, has undergone an intense programme of preparing the coastal zone for the high season in recent weeks. They have been sprucing up the beaches, gardening, and clearing unsightly areas. Being a destination chosen by hundreds of people who are looking for a holiday away from the crowds, Benissa is considered to be an increasingly popular tourist destination.

The clean-up, aimed at improving the common spaces, has been focused not only on the beaches, but also town centre itself, as well as the urbanisations of Montemar, Los Almendros, La Viña, Buenavista, San Jaime, Fanadix, Magraner, Finca Paquero and La Fustera, which prove popular for private lettings throughout the summer.
