Little movie makers tell a stark story

- By Jo Pugh

STUDENTS of the Santa María Magdalena CEIP school in Benitachell have used their talents to maintain social relations in an equal and respectful way in 'Qui Sóc?' (Who am I?), a short film which they have created and appear in. The film features a humanoid robot which they previously had to learn to programme.

The initiative is part of the educational innovation project ‘Programme your work’, a project where the goal is to produce a short film with a social purpose.

Qui Sóc begins when Leira, a much-adored student and great leader in school, is injured playing soccer and has to be absent from school for three months. In her place arrives Ariel, a humanoid robot who everybody despises. When Leira returns to school following her recovery, Ariel is gone and Leira is very sad. Her fellow pupils discover that both were the same person. One of them was idolised, another despised. Leira therefore, gives them a very important human lesson: 'Treat everyone as you wish to be treated’.

It is both an endearing and vindictive story, in which the students have learned to programme the robot and the movements and dialogues for the short film. The original idea, the script, characters and sets of the three short films were created by the students themselves.

The project commenced in January with training of the teachers who were involved in it. The short film will be screened for the first time on May 24 at the polytechnic school of the University of Alicante, along with 24 short films from other secondary and primary schools in the province of Alicante.
