Eddie's Final Whistle

- By Eddie Cagigao

2B Division, Group 3

The league leaders, Atletico Baleares, were the only side in the top five that won their match. This means they have once again increased their lead at the top to seven points. Baleares have 62 points whilst second placed Villarreal B are on 55 points, the same points tally as Hercules CF, in third position, with Cornella in fourth spot on 54 points. Lleida Esportiu, in fifth place one place outside the Play Off places, are on 51 points. At the opposite end of the table, Ontinyent will finish in last place as they have pulled out of the league. All their remaining matches will be awarded to their opponents as 1-0 defeats. So, the fight is still on for those just above them to make a final push to avoid being relegated.

One place above Ontinyent, in 19th position, are CD Alcoyano with 33 points and one place above CD Castellon who have 34 points. The two sides above them, CE Sabadell and UB Conquense are on 36 points each. However, only three points separate Conquense with the 12th placed side, SD Ejea, who are on 39 points.

Match day April 33 – 14

CD Alcoyano 1 – 1 CD Castellon Both sides needed the points for the very same reason as they are locked in a real relegation battle at the foot of the table. This match pitched CD Alcoyano, in 19th position with 33 points, against a CD Castellon side who are one place and one point above them.

The draw means relatively little to both sides but Alcoyano were just minutes away from getting the much needed win. Having gone ahead in the 14th minute, Alcoyano looked as if they would claim three valuable points. However, CD Castellon never gave up and when Jairo (a second half substitute) got his head onto a cross in the 90th minute, the ball ended up in the back of the net, much to the delight and wild celebration from the hundreds of Castellon fans who have travelled south for the game. Still everything to play for with 5 games remaining.

SD Ejea 0 – 0 Hercules CF

Hercules missed another wonderful chance to climb into second place as they could only manage a scoreless draw from their away match against SD Ejea, in a match which has to be said, neither side deserved to win.

This result means Hercules are now on the same points as Villarreal B (55 points) but are in third place due to the aggregate matches between the sides, which is how that finish level on points is decided here in Spain (as opposed to goal difference). For their part, SD Ejea wont´ be too unhappy with the points and will see it as a point won rather than two lost. They are in 12th position with 39 points although far from safe at this stage of the season as they are only three points above the relegation zone.

UB Conquense 3 – 0 Valencia CF Mestalla

A terrible result for the Valencia reserves as they went down 3-0 in Cuenca, against the local side UB Conquense. The visitors were 2-0 down after 20 minutes and despite all their efforts in the second half, they were unable to pull a goal back. The home side finished the game as they had started it by scoring their third goal on 90 minutes. The worst thing about this defeat is the fact that had Valencia won this game, they would have gone four points clear of the relegation places and seven points clear of Conquense. However, after this latest defeat for Valencia Mestalla, they are once again deep in relegation trouble. Currently they sit in 15th position with 37 points and just one point above the relegation zone.

FC Barcelona B 3 – 2 Atletico Levante UD

The good form over the past few weeks came to an end for Atletico Levante against a good FC Barcelona reserve side, where they went down 3-2. Despite this defeat, Atletico Levante should be safe for another season at this level. They are in 10th position with 45 points whilst FC Barcelona B, following this win, are up into 8th position on 49 points and only five points outside the Play Off places.

Ontinyent CF 0 – 1 CD Teruel

As Ontinyent have folded as a club at this level (their youth set up is still competing in their respective leagues), all their remaining fixtures will be awarded to their opponents by the same 1-0 score-line

Villarreal CF B 1 – 2 CD Ebro

Villarreal CF reserves missed a great opportunity to keep the pressure on the league leaders as they lost their home game which, on paper at least, appeared a quite straight forward affair for them. However, despite taking an early lead and looking as if they would increase that lead, by half time they had allowed the visitors to equalise and, having then taken a surprise lead on 76 minutes, CD Ebro were never going to through away the three points. This defeat keeps Villarreal in second spot although now level on points with Hercules CF. But there is now a seven point gap between them and league leaders, Atletico Baleares.

3rd Division

There are five matches of the regular season left to play in this group after last weekends´ round of matches. The league leaders, Orihuela CF, were held to a draw at CD Roda but still have a healthy five point lead at the top. They are on 71 points with La Nucia, in second place, on 66 points following their away win at Jove Español which effectively ended the Play Off chances of Jove at this stage of the season. Below La Nucia, Olimpic Xativa won their game against Atletico Saguntino and, in doing so, climb above them into third position with 60 points leaving Saguntino in fourth position on 58 points. The top four clubs at the end of the regular season go into the end of season Play Off matches to try and claim a place in the 2B division next season. Just outside the top four places are Crevillente Deportivo who are on 57 points and realistically the only side still capable of claiming one of those top four places which will be a massive achievement for the club should they manage to do so.

At the other end of the table, Paiporta CF are already relegated and have 18 points. But there are still two more relegation places to try and avoid. Currently Torre Levante and CD Acero, both on 31 points occupy the remaining relegation places. However, both Elche Ilicitano and Rayo Ibense, they two sides just above the drop zone, both have 32 points and far from safe.

Group 3

New leaders in this group as the in-form side, CD Denia take over at the top from long term leaders, UD Castellonense who drop down into second place after their draw at the weekend. CD Denia have 63 points whilst Castellonense are on 62 points. These two will fight it out for the Championship whilst UD Beniganim, in third place with 58 points, will have to fight to stay in third position as CD Javea and CF Tavernes, both on 55 points, will push them all the way it is expected.

Match day April 31 – 28 Group 4

As expected, Intercity San Juan will win this group unless Hercules B can produce a massive surprise and Intercity lose form, something which nobody can see happening. Intercity won again at the weekend emphatically crushing Redovan 7 – 0 and have 71 points whilst Hercules B have 64 after they were held to a home draw at the weekend. The draw allowed Villajoyosa to close the gap on them to just one point after their win. They now have 63 points and are followed by Independiente Alicante with 62 points, leaving CD Almoradi who have had an excellent season, out of the running in 5th position with 56 points.

Last weekend went a long way to deciding some of the relegation places, even though nothing has been officially decided just yet. The three bottom clubs all lost whilst the club in the first of the safety, Benidorm CD, won away at Orihuela. This leaves Villena bottom on 17 points, CD Torrevieja on 18 points and Aspe with 20 points in the final relegation position. There is now a four point gap between Aspe and Benidorm, a six point gap between CD Torrevieja and Benidorm and a seven point gap between Villena and Benidorm. With just four matches left to play, the three bottom sides will need to produce some stunning for if they are going to evade relegation.
