Big top performers show off their skills in Dénia

- By Samantha Kett skett@cbnews.es

JUGGLERS, clowns, acrobats, fire-eaters, tightrope-walkers, trapeze artists and just about everything else you'll find under the big top are on their way to Dénia for the final leg of a province-wide tour – and you can watch it all free of charge on the central C/ La Vía.

The partly-pedestrianised street near the port and the main Marqués de Campo boulevard will play host all day over Saturday and Sunday, September 28 and 29, to the highly-international CircArte Festival, which – as the name suggests – brings the circus and its performing artists to you, so you don't have to go to them.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, curtain-up on the CircArte Festival was on Friday, September 13 and it has since done the rounds of Alicante city, San Juan de Alicante, Mutxamel and San Vicente del Raspeig, and is now about to conclude in the Marina Alta district capital.

Performers from all over the UK, France, The Netherlands and Belgium join Spanish artists – local ones, and others from Murcia, Madrid, Andalucía, Galicia, Zaragoza, Castilla y León and Castilla-La Mancha.

In total, 60 of them from 25 circus companies will be showing off their impossible-looking skills – and this is only the second time they have been to Dénia, since the CircArte Festival did not extend its route to the north of the Costa Blanca until 2018.

One of the most unique and iconic festivals in the province, the CircArte also serves, according to its artistic director Lomi Szil, to bring visibility to circus performers as part of the ongoing battle nationwide for better working conditions for this notoriously underpaid sector.

Their first airing in Dénia will be at 19.00 with the RAR show by the circus company Balusca – and as it's al fresco and free, there's no need to book or pay. Just turn up and marvel at what the human body is capable of when it gets the right training!
