Saturday's Fun Day and Netball Tournament held at Brew Rock, Albir in honour of Lynne Ward and Caroline Lambert, who tragically both passed away from cancer last December raised an astounding €17,100! The event was organised by local businesswoman Lisa Griffin – owner of Brew Rock and The Shamrock in Benidorm and the netball committee who held meetings every week at Brew Rock.

Lisa, together with Lynn and Caroline were founder members of the Alfaz Netball team and she therefore thought what better fitting tribute than to hold a tournament for her dear friends and thta's how the idea took shape. Many members of the visiting teams had played against the two ladies and were only too happy to help.

Lynn’s illness was rapid, from diagnosis in October to her passing on Christmas Day and MABS provided equipment and carers three times a day. She leaves two children aged 12 and 14 and a husband, who has requested that he would like his share to go to the MABS Cancer Support Group.

Caroline lived in Alfaz but relocated back to the UK to help one of her daughters who had a brain tumour. Tragically she herself was diagnosed with cancer and died just two weeks before her friend – her share will go to brain tumour research and treatment.

Of the day Lisa said that she was “very grateful and humbled by everyone’s generosity. The community spirit shown by everyone was absolutely incredible and in the face of all the sadness surrounding the circumstances, was so inspiring”. But the day would not have been possible without the help and assistance of so many. First and foremost those that turned up and gave so generously. The ladies of the Alfaz netball team and those of the visiting sides, umpires and Wendy for putting the tournament together. Don Vicente and all the staff at the campsite, allowing us to use the facilities. The town hall for their support, especially the mayor Vicente Arques and Councillor for Sport Oscar Pérez Quesada, who handed out the trophies. All the musicians, DJ’s, bar staff and Dani Bowler for his fabulous paella cooking. Local radio stations and press for publicity, in particular Dino at the We Love Albir Facebook page, Zeblack Alfaz for all the free posters and Alba Ramon in Alfaz for the free t-shirts. All the children who sold bracelets and raffle tickets on the day and the many generous businesses who donated prizes for it. Gary from the Giving4Giving charity also popped in during the afternoon and handed €1,000 to Lisa for the event. Miguel, Robbie and Joe who oversaw the tournament, auction and raffle, Emma, Tracey, Jody and Jo who assisted Lisa throughout but most importantly, the families.

Well done and thanks to all.
