Another cut-off low due to affect Spain
ALICANTE province and Murcia are gearing up for another episode of heavy rain.
Alicante university climatology lab reported that a cutoff low pressure weather system (gota fría) is likely to affect the Mediterranean area from Sunday.
They noted that it will lead to very cold air – temperatures of around -27ºC at 5,600 metres above the Earth’s surface. This will bring snow to low-lying areas in the north of Spain on Sunday and Monday.
The climatology lab’s Samuel Biener explained that weather forecasting models show that a cut-off low is then likely to affect the south-east of Spain.
However, there is great uncertainty over whether the weather system will bring torrential rain once again to the area.
He reminded that a cut-off low (gota fría) alone does not lead to intense downpours and a number of other factors have to coincide in order for this to occur.
State weather agency AEMET’s forecast for the coming week shows a marked fall in temperatures for the Costa Blanca area.
Highs of 20ºC and 19ºC have been predicted for Torrevieja on Monday and Tuesday respectively with a high probability of rain.
In Benidorm temperatures are forecasted to be two degrees higher but with 100% probability of rain on both days.
Inland in the Guadalest valley a high of just 13ºC is predicted for Confrides on Monday with a 100% probability of rain.
No special alerts had been issued by AEMET over the situation as Costa Blanca News went to press.
Updates over this changing situation will appear on the Costa Blanca News Facebook page.
