AROUND 3,000 athletes are set to participate in the second Gran Carrera del Mediterráneo road race on Sunday, November 3.

The event itself is a 20 kilometre run going parallel to the coast which passes through the municipalities of Alicante, Elche and Santa Pola.

The run follows a route from Alicante provincial palace and passes through emblematic parts of the province including El Palmeral park, the beaches of Urbanova, Arenales del Sol and Carabassí and the Cabo de Santa Pola before finishing at Varadero beach in Santa Pola.

Further details and registration are available through the event website at http://lagrancarreradelmediterraneo.com/

In addition to the run there is also a paddle surf event (SUP), which gives people the opportunity to participate in one of three categories: a 13.5km course for elite paddle surfers running from Agua Urbanova to Playa Varadero; a 4km course for participants in the amateur and under 16 and under 14 categories from Playa Cimar to Playa Varadero; and under 12, under 10 and under 8 category courses of 500 or 1,000 metres, based in the sea off of Playa Varadero in Santa Pola.

Gran Carrera del Mediterráneo is described as a ‘grand fiesta of sport’ and to this end the grounds of the provincial palace will be open for a variety of diverse complementary sporting activities on November 2-3.
