Orihuela Costa Veteranos suffer shock first league defeat
Orihuela Costa Veteranos suffered their first league defeat at the hands of an Atletico San Isidro side who played some good football at times and did very well in snuffing out the home sides attacking threat.
In what was a scrappy first half the away side went in leading 1-2. Helped by a contentious penalty decision which went against the home side. When the referee went to his pocket every player and spectator assumed the diving Atletico player would receive a caution but to everyone’s amazement the referee handed a yellow to the home defender even though he later said he didn’t see contact but thought he heard it ......
Orihuela Costa Veteranos never looked comfortable and were below par throughout resulting in an emphatic win for the travellers from Atletico San Isidro.
A late scuffle ended in a dismissal for the home side and two from the away side in a game that was not of a violent nature. However this did not affect the result.
Captain Paul Gardner said “We have to hold our hands up and know that we were not good enough in all areas.
We must learn from this and stay strong as a team and get back to our strengths for our next game “
Final result : Orihuela Costa Veteranos 2 - 7 Atletico San Isidro
Goal scorers: Runar Olafsson 1 - Declan Houlihan 1
Man Of the Match: Declan Houlihan
