Away trip October 8 - 11 Twenty eight LGS playing members and nine non playing guests enjoyed an excellent away trip to the Mar Menor region between October 8 and 11. Three team rounds of golf were played at different courses, with the format and teams of four being changed each day. Prizes were awarded for first, second and third placed teams on each day.

This annual trip is planned to be fun and relaxed, away from the regular weekly competitions of the rest of the year. However pride and the natural competitive streak of LGS members ensured that the standard of golf was high, though perhaps by the final day it reflected the cumulative effect of the pre-dinner happy (two) hours at the hotel bar, the wine during the meal and the post dinner visits to the bar!

Las Colinas was the venue for the first round, played as a team accumulator (two to score on par 5s, three on par 4s and four on par 3s). This attractive and challenging course was in good condition, except for the bunkers which had been badly affected by the recent devastating Gota Fria. The deserved winners on the day (by a clear 5 points) were LGS Captain Don Larner, John Williams, Sean Carr and Brian Barden.

Day two was at Roda Golf Club, a deceptively challenging course, whilst being fairly flat, a combination of bunkers and water means that every hole has difficulties. The format was again a team accumulator, but this time with the best two scores out of four to count on each hole. The winners were Bob Fell, Moe Farouky, David Lawson and Jenny Downes.

The third round was at most members’ favourite course in this region, Lo Romero, with its spectacular signature island green on the eighteenth. The format was a ‘waltz’ with one player to score on the first, two to score on the second and three on the third, with the one, two, three to score continued around the course. The winning team was Captain Don Larner (again) Sean Carr (again) Danny Herron and Mike Harding.

Over the three days of golf a par three challenge competition was held, raising 140 Euros for the Captain’s charity. The clear winner by a margin of three points was Alan Overton who accumulated thirty-two Stableford points on the par threes across the three courses, spectacularly scoring five points on one hole at Las Colinas. Finally, in order to ensure that no-one went home empty handed, a sleeve of LGS golf balls was given to the small number of unfortunate members who had failed to win anything else!

Our next match will be back at Oliva Nova competing in a pair’s competition for the prestigious Captain’s Day Salver.
